Start Date 07/06/2010
Yeast Flavour Production - New Biocatalysts and Novel Molecular Mechanisms Acronym: BIOFLAVOUR
MONITORING
PROGRESS REPORT
Reporting Period: from 1 May 2011 to 1 May 2012
This Report is presented to the relevant Domain Committee.
It contains three parts:
I. Management Report prepared by the COST Office/Grant Holder
II. Scientific Report prepared by the Chair of the Management Committee of the Action
III. Previous versions of the Scientific Report; i.e., part II of past reporting periods
The report is a “cumulative” report, i.e. it is updated annually and covers the entire period of the Action.
Confidentiality: the documents will be made available to the public via the COST Action web page except for chapter II.D. Self evaluation.
Based on the monitoring results, the COST Office will decide on the following year’s budget allocation.
Executive summary (max.250 words):
A special session was dedicated to BIOFLAVOUR in the XIII Weurman Flavour Research Symposium that was held 27-30th September 2011 in Zaragoza, Spain. The session was opened with a conference by Action Chair G.M. de Billerbeck presenting the BIOFLAVOUR Network. The scientific and technical activities of the BIOFLAVOUR Consortium were furthermore developed through lectures, short communications and poster presentations by COST Action experts.
A Training School entitled “Metabolite profiling approaches in microorganisms and higher plants” was organized jointly by COST Actions FA0907 (BIOFLAVOUR) and FA1006 (PlantEngine) from March 19th to 22nd 2012.
The 3rd edition of the scientific meeting entitled European Yeast Flavour Workshop organized by COST Action FA0907 BIOFLAVOUR will take place 20-22nd June 2012 in Vevey, Switzerland. The 4th MC and WG Meetings will be held at that occasion.
A first draft of the Bioflavour Strains Database (BSD) architecture was defined and the corresponding web interface is being conceived. A new version of the Action website will be opened in the next months.

Objectives
|
The main objective of this Action is to mainstream and catalyze transnational research in the flavour area, through coordination of research activities in genomics, functional genomics, biodiversity, metabolic engineering, and bioprocessing engineering. The immediate scientific and technological benefit will be to build the foundation for the development of biotechnological and eco-efficient production of natural flavour compounds that will eliminate potential risks for consumer’s health and the environment. Flavours and Fragrances (F&F) are highly important quality components in food, beverages, cosmetics, detergents and pharmaceutical products. Nowadays, most F&F molecules are produced by chemical synthesis or by extraction from plants. The need for environmentally friendly processes and the consumer’s preference for natural products encourage research and development in the biotechnological production of F&F. This calls for a strong investment in capacity building through molecular, genetic and metabolic studies of the microbial flavour synthesis, which is at the moment relatively scarce. This COST Action will build a unique European Yeast Flavour Network addressing fundamental research in natural bioflavour production through an innovative systems biology approach.
