3893 1940 German Occupation "swastika JERSEY 1940" opt GB Stamp Centenary 1½d. Superb fresh MUH, pristine original gum. At the start of German Occupation, the commandant ordered all stocks of GB stamps be delivered to Bigwoods printery & opt with a swastika etc. However, after objections from Bailiff of Jersey & consultations with Berlin, a decision was made not to issue the opt stamps & destroy all stock. All were then burnt, apart from several sets which were kept for archives or souvenirs. SG JW15 cat £3250+++, much under-catalogued as no examples have been on the market for very many years, & only several genuine examples exist (forgeries being plentiful!). The only MUH example known to us. We previously sold the 2d from same issue for $8700 in 2009. Great rarity of significant historical importance. 2013 Ceremuga photo cert. (P) $7000 $10000

3894 1940 German Occupation Arms of Jersey "Etats de Jersey" 1d scarlet design prepared by Bigwoods, both normal stamp & also with "swastika / 1940" opt. These stamps were prepared by the Bigwoods printery but due to objections from Bailiff of Jersey & consultations with Berlin, they were never issued. Superb fresh MUH, pristine original gum & both matching left marginal. SG JW19 & JW20 cat £6000++, & under-catalogued (examples in our auction 295 sold for $5800+). Only 2 sheets of 30 recorded of each, & of those many were creased etc, with only tiny number of perfect MUH such as these existing. In blue crayon, presumably indicating postage to be collected from addressee. The apparent date discrepancy explained by the fact that Triest, then in Austro-Hungarian empire was using the Julian calendar, while Greece was still using the Gregorian calendar which was 12 days behind -so 8th October is really 20th.
