7. 5. Academic staff working in the study programme

7.5.1. Number and qualification of the academic staff

As reflected in the table, 24 lecturers have Master’s degree, 6 of them are studying for their Doctor’s degree , 5 of them work full-time,1 is working part-time.

The figures below reflect the provision of the programme with lecturers both according to their position (Figure 24), academic degree (Figure 25) and type of labour relations (Figure 26).

In comparison with the previous self-evaluation period it is evident that the number of lecturers and professors in the programme has increased. Three associate professors occupy the positions of professors. The growth of the percentage of lecturers can be explained by the fact that new lecturers have been invited to deliver the specialised courses of the branch in the programme: practising personnel managers, managers, public relations specialists, who currently work in their speciality. Unfortunately, the current situation does not allow them to combine work with PhD studies. In its turn, the number of assistants involved in the study programme has decreased and reached 0.

Changes in the division of the positions of the academic staff

Changes in the positions of the academic staff during the accreditation period

78% students assess the professionalism of RTTEMA academic staff as adequate and just a small part of them emphasize that lecturers’ professionalism could be higher

7.5.2. Provision of the programme with the academic staff in Alūksne and Cēsis branches

Tables No. 10 and 11 depict the provision of the study programme with the academic staff in Alūksne and Cēsis branches. As the number of students studying in the branches is comparatively small, most of the academic staff work part-time.

7.5.4. Policy of the selection, renewal, training and development of the academic staff

  • To attract more lecturers to a full-time job in this programme, measures of the popularisation of the programme and the personnel manager’s profession should be taken in order to provide the programme with a sufficient number of students.

  • The policy of the remuneration of experienced, professional and educated lecturers should be directed towards their involvement in full-time job with such a level of remuneration and stimulation system that it would compete successfully with the remuneration of good specialists in the private sector. This would raise both the quality of the study programme and the prestige of the lecturer’s profession.

  • Next year both the Division of Economics and Management and RTTEMA Personnel Department plan to carry out the evaluation of the lecturers’ work the result of which will affect their pay.

  • At the moment several PhD students of psychology and management sciences ( including those who are studying abroad) have shown interest in this programme. It is important to develop different cooperation and research projects of Latvian and foreign higher educational establishments and other organisations funded by a third organisation. Within the projects students and lecturers could implement their scientific research interests, receiving remuneration for their work and at the same time involving students in the research work.

  • For the enhancement and provision of the study programme it is planned to involve more practising specialists in the work of the programme- both as practice supervisors, advisors of diploma papers and members of the Qualification Examination Commission. Students appreciate the opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience from a practising specialist in the professional study programme.

  • Seminars aimed to improve the lecturers’ proficiency must be introduced to the programme as a tradition. Since the programme is devised for part-time students, the lecturers of the programme meet very rarely. By organising such seminars of the exchange of experience, lecturers’ groups could be formed in order to implement ideas essential for the development of the programme by joint effort.

  • Every year a competition for the vacant academic positions is announced at RTTEMA. All the submitted documents are evaluated by the Competition Commission according to the criteria worked out by RTTEMA Senate.

  • RTTEMA lecturers increase their proficiency by studying for their PhD degree and participating in conferences. The Academy’ s administration will provide material support for this kind of lecturers’ activity.
