ABSTRACT

To meet energy demand using renewable energy in rural regions and agricultural establishments is useful in point of a sustainable environment and also energy costs. Nowadays, different type wind turbines some of which are commercial are being used. Those are horizontal and vertical axes wind turbines. For agricultural applications, horizontal axes wind turbines are mostly used.

Especially small-scaled wind turbines generating electricity directly are possible to use various purposes in agricultural establishments. These usage areas can be all agricultural activities requiring electricity such as heating, cooling, drying, illumination and supporting milking machines.

In this study, small-scaled concentrator wind turbine prototypes which can be used in regions having low wind speed potential were designed for agricultural applications. To utilize low wind speeds and to gain comparatively high power values, three different designs were made. Those three different designs were constructed as prototypes. As the result of experiments, it was found that power values between 324 and 503 W/m2 (at 5 m/s wind speed) could be obtained using those turbines.

Within the study, efficiency, power, energy producing capacity and economical facts of the models were introduced, and possible consequences of these parameters were evaluated in agricultural aspect. According to these evaluations, it was found that efficiency values were varied between 71% and 90% for wind speed and varied between 410% and 600% for wind power. And it was found that energy producing capacities for conical wind turbine system, panel turbine system and wind turbine system without integrated panel were 6462 kWh/year.m2, 5193 kWh/year.m2 and 8226 kWh/year.m2, respectively. It was concluded that those systems were not economical in respect to unit costs of energy production. It is required to increase system size and to reduce costs via mass production for more economy.

Eventually, power and energy values per area of proposed wind turbine systems were better by comparing common wind turbines which are being used recently. On the other hand, it was assessed that those systems were not economical under recent conditions, but with more study they could be more economic.
