-
In some examples, the main state is determined by the State or Territory with the highest employment.

Recent Industry Developments – Adelaide Hills
-
Terramin’s Angas zinc mine at Strathalbyn may close earlier than anticipated due to falling commodity prices. The mine was expected to operate until 2015, but based on current zinc prices, would have between 20 and 22 months before it became uneconomical. (The Advertiser, 30 June 2012)
-
Manufacturing company Clipsal will close its Strathalbyn factory and consolidate all of its SA operations at Gepps Cross. Around 100 permanent jobs will be transferred to Gepps Cross, while another 30-50 casual jobs will cease when the Strathalbyn factory closes at the end of 2012. (The Courier, 21 March 2012)
-
Hillgrove Resources’ Kanmantoo copper and gold mine commenced operating in December, becoming SA’s 19th mine. Around 20,000 tonnes of copper and 10,000 ounces of gold concentrate will be produced annually for at least six and a half years, although the mine could potentially operate for a longer period subject to further exploration. The mine cost $173 million to build and employs around 160 people. (The Advertiser, 23 February 2012)
-
Terramin Australia has defined a new mineral resource 500m from its Angas zinc and lead mine at Strathalbyn. The additional resource has the potential to extend mining operations at the Angas mine, subject to further exploration and drilling results. (The Advertiser, 30 November 2011)
-
Following a small delay, production at Hillgrove Resources’ Kanmantoo copper & gold mine is expected to commence within the next 7-10 days. The $135 million mine will produce about 20,000 tonnes of copper and 10,000 ounces of gold per year. The mine has an expected operating life of ten years. (The Advertiser, 9 November 2011)
-
Contrary to earlier reports, quarantine zones will not be introduced into fruit growing regions across SA in response to imported New Zealand apples. The state government will instead launch a public awareness campaign to discourage people from discarding unwanted fruit in apple-growing regions, such as the Adelaide Hills and the South East. The campaign will include erecting property and road signs. (The Border Watch, 21 October 2011)
-
The SA Government will establish quarantine zones around apple and pear growing districts to prevent the spread of disease from imported New Zealand apples. The zones are expected to be operating in the Riverland and Adelaide Hills in around six weeks. (The Advertiser, 30 August 2011)
-
A World Trade Organisation ruling has allowed the import of New Zealand apples into Australia, potentially increasing risks to local fruit from imported plant disease, such as fire blight. The SA Government is likely to expand existing quarantine laws to prevent New Zealand apples from entering the Adelaide Hills, although such a scheme would be costly to implement. (The Advertiser, 23 August 2011)
-
Confidence in the state’s dairy industry is low, with one in ten farmers expected to leave the industry within two years. High levels of farm debt, ongoing low milk prices and the impending carbon tax (expected to cost an average of $8,000 per annum) are likely to force many dairy farmers out of the industry. (The Advertiser, 23 July 2011)
