Population Characteristics

In June 2011, the estimated resident population (ERP) of the Fleurieu/Kangaroo Island ESA was 36,957, representing a 1.3 per cent increase compared to a year earlier. Over the five years to June 2011, the ESA’s population grew by 11.5 per cent, the highest rate of growth of any ESA in South Australia and well above the growth rate for SA as a whole over the same period (5.6 per cent). The Fleurieu/Kangaroo Island ESA comprised 2.2 per cent of the state’s total population in June 2011. (Source: ABS Catalogue 3218.0, Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2010-11.)


ABS Census data show that there were 400 indigenous persons living in the Fleurieu/Kangaroo Island ESA in August 2011. This represented 1.1 per cent of the local population, and 1.3 per cent of the State’s total indigenous population.

Educational Attainment

ABS 2006 Census data show that 35 per cent of persons aged 15+ in the Fleurieu/Kangaroo Island ESA held a non-school qualification, compared to 37 per cent for South Australia as a whole.
