Population Characteristics

In June 2011, the estimated resident population (ERP) of the Kadina/Clare ESA was 47,723, representing a 0.4 per cent increase compared to a year earlier. Over the five years to June 2011, the ESA’s population grew by 4.9 per cent, which was below the growth rate for South Australia as a whole over the same period (5.6 per cent). The Kadina/Clare ESA comprised 2.9 per cent of the state’s total population in June 2011. (Source: ABS Catalogue 3218.0, Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2010-11.)


ABS Census data show that there were 881 indigenous persons living in the Kadina/Clare ESA in August 2011. This represented 1.9 per cent of the local population, and 2.9 per cent of the State’s total indigenous population.

Educational Attainment

ABS 2006 Census data show that around 29 per cent of persons aged 15+ in the Kadina/Clare ESA held a non-school qualification, compared to 37 per cent for South Australia as a whole.

Recent Industry Developments – Kadina/Clare





  • Truenergy plans to add six new wind turbines to its Waterloo wind farm located near Clare in a $40 million expansion. If granted development approval, the number of turbines at Waterloo will increase to 43. Construction is expected to be completed by 2013-14. (The Advertiser, 16 May 2012)




  • Rex Minerals hopes to begin construction of its Hillside copper and gold mine in late 2013, with production beginning in 2015. The company is considering building a slurry pipeline to transport the ore concentrate from the mine to the port of Ardrossan, ten kilometres away. Although the project is still in the feasibility stage, Rex expects to export one shipload a month of copper and gold concentrate and one a week of magnetite iron ore. (The Advertiser, 2 May 2012)




  • SeaSA will resume its ferry service from Wallaroo to Lucky Bay on 21 February. The new $12 million ferry, Aurora V, will undertake two return crossing per day, carrying up to 85 cars and 300 passengers. (The Advertiser, 15 February 2012)




  • The Wallaroo to Lucky Bay ferry service is expected to resume operating in early 2012, following cessation of services two years ago. According to operator SeaSA, a new ferry is under construction in Indonesia and is expected to arrive in Wallaroo in the new year. (The Advertiser, 21 October 2011)




  • Rex Minerals has upgraded the size of its Hillside copper project near Ardrossan to 100,000 tonnes per annum, more than double the original estimate. The mine will cost $900 million to build and have an operational life of ten years. (The Advertiser, 11 October 2011)




  • Indian-based company Suzlon Group will build a 180 turbine wind farm near Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula. The project is expected to produce around 25 per cent of the state’s daily electricity consumption when completed in late 2015. Around 500 construction workers will be needed, while another 50 permanent positions will be created. (The Advertiser, 31 August 2011)




  • Rex Minerals has upgraded by 25 per cent the size of a proposed copper and gold mine near Ardrossan. The Hillside Resource has the potential for up to 45,000 tonnes of copper, 45,000 ounces of gold and 900,000 tonnes of iron ore each year. Mine construction could start in 2013.
