Recent Industry Developments – Murraylands

  • Murray Bridge Council has approved plans for a multi-million dollar drag-racing strip on a 200 hectare site west of Murray Bridge. It is not know when construction will commence. (The Advertiser, 29 May 2012)

  • The SA Government has approved the resumption of mineral sands mining at Mindarie in the Murray Mallee. The approval is conditional on the mine’s owners – Murray Zircon – rehabilitating land disturbed by previous mining operations. (The Advertiser, 30 April 2012)

  • Murray Zircon hopes to reopen the Mindarie mineral sands mine in the second half of this year, subject to State Government approval. The new operation would be a scaled-down version of the previous mine, employing 30 to 40 people. The mine will export a mineral sands concentrate to China for further processing, rather than producing an end product, such as zircon or rutile. (The Advertiser, SA Business Journal, 6 March 2012)

  • Woolworth’s new $90 million Marketplace shopping precinct will open in Murray Bridge on 3 November. The 54-store complex includes a supermarket, Big W and a Dick Smith outlet. Around 275 retail jobs have been created as a result. (The Advertiser, 3 November 2011)

  • Melbourne-based United Dairy Power has purchased the Murray Bridge and Jervois cheese factories after they were placed on the market earlier this year. All existing employees will transfer to the new owner, while production at the Jervois plant will increase from five to six days per week, effective immediately. Demand for milk at the two sites will double within twelve months, supporting local milk suppliers. The number of employees is also likely to rise going forward. (The Advertiser, 20 October 2011)

  • A multi-million dollar drag racing facility is planned for a 200ha site on Maurice Road at Murray Bridge. A planning application has been lodged with Murray Bridge Council and should be considered in October-November this year. Construction could be begin 3 months after approval. (The Advertiser, 27 August 2011)

  • The Mindarie mineral sands mine may reopen later this year, according to new joint venture owners Australian Zircon and Chinese minerals company Orient Zirconic. The mine closed in 2009 but global zircon prices have risen strongly in the past twelve months, increasing the mine’s financial viability. However, any future start-up would require PIRSA approval, pending further land rehabilitation work, while feasibility studies by the mine owners are still in progress. Up to 80 jobs could be created at the mine. (The Advertiser, 9 August 2011)
