Recent Industry Developments – Northern Adelaide

  • The 2012-13 State Budget includes $11.3 million for improving facilities at Salisbury East High School and Windsor Gardens Vocational College. The budget also includes $10.5 million to rehabilitate the sludge lagoon at the Bolivar Waste Water Treatment Plant. (2012-13 SA State Budget Papers, 31 May 2012)

  • Construction of a $60 million shopping centre and apartment complex at Mawson Lakes has commenced. Adelaide-based property group Taplin is behind the project which includes a three-level shopping complex with 600 car parks, and 40 ‘green living’ apartments on adjacent land. Construction work is expected to be completed by early-to-mid 2013. (The Advertiser, SA Business Journal, 29 May 2012)

  • Holden will begin exporting Commodores to the US next year, although the deal will not create any additional jobs at the Elizabeth factory. The cars will be rebadged as a Chevrolet SS and will sell in the high-performance car segment in the US. It is not known how many cars will be built locally for export. (The Australian Financial Review, 18 May 2012)

  • Walker Corporation will commence work on its $2 billion residential development at Buckland Park in September. The company has committed $76 million to the first stage of its Riverlea project, which includes 150 allotments and associated infrastructure, such as water, power and gas services. Riverlea will expand to 12,000 new homes over the next twenty years. (The Advertiser, 10 April 2012)

  • National training provider IS Australia has established a multi-million dollar facility at Para Hills West to provide targeted training for more than 5000 northern suburbs job seekers per annum. The company will focus on training people for jobs in mining, construction, horticulture, logistics and clerical fields. (The Advertiser, 29 March 2012)

  • Holden will receive a combined $275 million from the Australian ($215m), SA ($50m) and Victorian ($10m) governments to keep its Australian car plants open for the next decade. In return, Holden will invest $1 billion and build two next-generation cars in Australia at its Elizabeth plant. The Federal Government will also provide $16 million to retrain car industry workers who have lost their jobs. (ABC News website, 22 March 2012)

  • Up to 100 temporary and casual jobs will be cut over the coming months as part of efficiency savings at Holden’s Elizabeth factory. Production will move to a single day shift from early February, with vehicle production being wound back from 460 to 400 cars per day. Holden has cited the high Australian dollar and lower than expected growth in export markets as the main reasons for the cutbacks. The factory employs around 2,400 full-time workers. (The Advertiser, 2 February 2012)

  • Holden says it is committed to building cars at Elizabeth until 2020, but government funding will be needed to enable the company to remain globally competitive. Negotiations between Holden and the state and federal governments are continuing, with an investment deal expected to be signed in the next six months. (News Review, 19 January 2012)

  • A $177 million defence contract to manufacture components for the Joint Strike Fighter will create around 80 jobs. New high-tech machinery will be installed at BAE Systems’ Edinburgh factory, creating 22 jobs. Victorian-based Rosebank Engineering will also establish a factory at Edinburgh to treat and finish the parts manufactured by BAE, resulting in 60 jobs. The SA Government has partly funded the new equipment at BAE, estimated to cost $10 million. (The Advertiser, 17 January 2012)

  • Elizabeth West-based company Ausco has won a contract to build transportable accommodation units for the Olympic Dam expansion project. The firm expects to recruit an additional 40 workers for the contract, which will take about a year to complete. (The Advertiser, 14 January 2012)

  • The South Australian Premier has held talks with General Motors in Detroit, and has confirmed that GM will be seeking “substantial” government funds to continue designing and building vehicles in Australia under the GM Holden banner. Economists estimate that government investment of $200-500 million will be required to ensure Holden remains viable beyond 2016. (The Advertiser, 11 January 2012)

  • Construction of 432 new housing units at the Edinburgh RAAF Base has commenced. Built Environs is expected to sub-contract more than 1400 people to work on the $89 million project. Work is expected to be completed by mid-2013. (News Review Messenger, 23 November 2011)

  • Coca-Cola Amatil will build a $20 million distribution facility on the former Bridgestone tyre factory site at Salisbury. The new facility will replace the company’s existing distribution centre at Gilman, with around 80 staff relocating to the new site. (The Advertiser, 16 November 2011)

  • Export sales of the Holden Commodore to the Middle East, Brazil and the US continue to decline. Overseas sales this year are likely to drop to about 10 per cent of their record 60,518 cars in 2005. Last year’s total was 7,817 cars. However, demand for the long-wheelbase Caprice remains relatively strong in the Middle East, while there is growing demand for police car sales in the US. (The Advertiser, 15 November 2011)

  • Construction of a new solar cell manufacturing plant has commenced at Mawson Lakes. The Tindo Solar plant is expected to be ready for testing in December, although it will take 2-3 years to reach full production capacity. The plant will eventually employ 45 people. • The state government has created a new suburb in Playford, called Edinburgh North, comprising the whole of Elizabeth West and a portion of adjoining Penfield. The name change is intended to improve export opportunities for local businesses, as Edinburgh is believed to be more well known internationally than Elizabeth West. (The Advertiser, SA Business Journal, 8 November 2011)

  • National rail freight company SCT Logistics has purchased a 39ha property at Penfield as the site for a new terminal. The company will move from its current premises on Grand Junction Rd once the new facility is completed next April. Around 300 existing workers will be employed at the new site. (News Review, 2 November 2011)

The Cruze has averaged around 3,000 sales per month since then. The new hatch is expected to add another 1,000 sales per month. Holden’s Elizabeth factory is currently building 400-450 vehicles per day, including the Commodore sedan, wagon and ute range, as well as the long-wheelbase Caprice and Cruze.
