Chapter III.A.2 Searching Tips for Korean Materials on RLIN CJK

By Yunha Sung

First log on to RLIN and select an appropriate file; BKS for books and SER for serials. Type “set scr all” to view Korean fonts. Basic tips on searching a record in Korean are the followings;

  • Leave out all the diacritics in searching terms. Such diacritics as alif, ayn, and breve are normalized

  • Searching with Han’gul characters will retrieve only those records containing Han’gul vernacular fields. But searching with Hancha (Chinese) characters will retrieve all records not only in Korean, but also in Chinese and Japanese, containing Hancha vernacular fields

  • Use the Language menu to select Korean and then select either McCune-Reischauer for Han’gul or McCune-Reischauer for Hancha
