4.Main points discussed during the meeting

The specific topics covered and issues addressed/resolved during the meeting are presented in the following paragraphs grouped per project Activity. The action points that were generated can be found in the next section.

  • NA1: Technical Execution plan – opening and closing presentations – were given by Ioannis, laying out the main aims of PSC, summing up work aims and progress per activity; and main future actions per Activity respectively. NA1 presentation was given by Ognjen, with objectives, activities, milestones and deliverables overview – as for review. It was agreed that next meeting will be in Dubrovnik during week 7-11 September, and Karolj and Davor will inform the consortium ASAP. PSC06 will be held together with User Forum and Regional User Training in Istanbul – a full week 30Nov – 4Dec. PSC07 might be held in Zabljak in early 2010 and Luka and Bozo will investigate. It was agreed that VOs will continue to use EVO. Status of MoUs was reiterated (5 signed so far), and it was underlined that Activity Leaders should pursue actions as within MoUs. It was concluded that EAB is not needed and will not be formed. The necessity for contract amendment due to change of geomagnetism application will be investigated. It was pointed out that the quarterly report is in its near-final version, and different aspects of resource consumption have been analyzed – overall the project is on track. It was underlined that budget distribution will be carried out sometime in Q7, and also that travel costs are lower than expected and partners are invited to publish scientific work stemming for the project activities at conferences. It was agreed that the following issues will be underlined in the final report: delays in Moldova, overall problems in Albania, various small technical problems. Regarding deviations from workplan, only geomagnetism application change will be underlined. It was again stressed that contributions for all deliverables keep being late, that partners are fully responsible, and that deadlines must be followed because this is basic fairness and respect towards colleagues that partners collaborate with. Budget cuts will be implemented due to delays in previous and following quarters if partners cannot follow this basic rule. Ognjen also elaborated on future plans for EGI project, to be submitted to a call in November 2009. The project will bring together all NGIs from Europe, and NGI funding will be proportional to the size of the NGI in terms of CPUs and users, while applications funding will be through the Specialized Support Centers. Thus, all countries should strive to stabilize completely their NGIs, as well as to lobby for membership in European-wide SSCs. Ioannis presented different functional model for regional operations for the NGI era. It was decided that some level of regional operations will be kept and that some services will be ran on behalf of some partners – there was no objections. The idea of SEEGRID SSC was mentioned. Acad Boyanov brought forward the idea of the MoU on the regional level and it was agreed that Ognjen will investigate this.

  • NA2 leader has given the presentation as for review, with objectives, tasks, deliverables and milestones status. Metrics set was presented, as well as the associated monitoring approach. DNA2.3a results were presented in detail. Specifically, EGI metrics were analyzed and suggestions to partners were provided. Following this, progress per country was given, with recommendations by the NA2 leader: all countries should consult the NA2 presentation recommendations. AL, BA and MK should still send a Letter of Support to EGI-DS. All NGI representatives should study the NGI requirements for EGI membership and take relevant actions and attend the EGI PB meetings and also monitor SSC developments.

  • NA3 leader gave the presentation as for first review, with objectives, deliverables & milestones, and activities with detailed achievements per activity. A number of suggestions were made regarding the review presentation, specifically the graphs, and Miklos will take these into account. The action point status was revisited. The ISGTW publication plan was presented and agreed at the PSC level – average of 1-2 submissions a month – but this could depend on ISGTW and its backlog – Miklos should inform ISGTW. Upcoming dissemination event opportunities were discussed and partners were suggested to submit their work. The SEEGRIDSCI User Forum was discussed in detail – Miklos and ULAKBIM will drive the organization. A set of actions was defined related to this, including investigation of possibility of publication of proceedings. It was reiterated that in the second year we would expect to see similar amount of disseminations and training as in first year, to which the PSC agreed. Related to this, 2nd year training and dissemination plans should be put together by all partners. Online training materials have to be strengthened. Overall, it was concluded that a wider dissemination campaign is needed, and that this should be driven more strongly by NA3 leader.

  • NA4 presentation was given almost as for review (mixed with some actions), and covered the objectives, tasks, deliverables and milestones. Application review process was reiterated, and needs to be enforced continuously. DNA4.2 overview was given, with detailed applications status per VO. It was identified that actual collaborations should be clearly explained. Most importantly, all applications should go into production immediately, and those with late deployment deadlines should be monitored closely by NA4 leader and VO leaders. The status of Al CHERS application is not good and effort has to be concentrated there, Romanian and Bulgarian colleagues will provide support. The new applications from BG and HR have been accepted in the meteo VO. Modis has to provide a report regarding its interaction with GreenView. Applications accounting was presented and discussed (per-application accounting will need to be implemented but will not be presented at review). Structure of ASG was reiterated. The need for VO EVO meetings was also underlined, as well as the necessity to circulate minutes after the meeting. The need for more active dissemination of applications was identified – application web pages must be made. Gridifcation guideline deliverable has been discussed in detail, and timeline for production was suggested and agreed. Brief status of collaborations with other projects was given and it was agreed that these will be followed specifically within VOs. Regarding the SEEGRIDSCI user forum, it was underlined that all applications must attend the forum, and collaborating projects will be invited. Metrics were presented, and they are on track, but number of users per application needs to be provided. Status of action points was presented and new actions were identified. NA4 leader underlined that progress of applications should be followed closely by the VO Leaders during the last year of the project, in which Application Review Process becomes more important. He also underlined that in case of a technical problem, ASG should be immediately contacted through HelpDesk + mailing lists announced. Also, other VO activities (workshops, trainings). The most important NA4 point is that the project objective is to engage strong regional communities in the selected research fields, and that thus NA4 developers should deploy their applications ASAP in production so as to attract collaborations. NA4 developers should also disseminate applications and results; reach out to wider communities; make sure rich material is on the webpages; and finally publish collaborative papers.

Meteorology VO overall presentation was given by V.Kotroni, as for review, presenting the scope and aims of the meteo VO. The detailed REFS and WRF deployment plans and progress were presented, where all targets are met. Action plans for year 2 were presented. Dissemination aspects of meteo VO were presented. WRF was confirmed as the review application (with output graph visualisations). Finally, meteo VO metrics were presented. The collaboration of meteo VO with JRA1 is not clear and their use of OT/AS needs to be clarified. Overall, the meteo VO review presentation should be shorter and review demo needs to be prepared.

Seismology VO review presentation was not prepared and only status progress was given. Dissemination activities were presented, as well as international cooperation activities – here cooperation with EIDA and ORFEUS has to be investigated and reported upon, including potential MoU. The status of data collection is not satisfactory - data collection is a crucial issue: at least countries collaborating as in DoW should provide (Albania, Armenia, Moldova); while we aim to work with as many countries as possible (GR, SR, RO, BG, BA, ME and HU). Status of applications was presented in detail: however, it was not clear what are the contributions of third parties to applications development, and VO leader must have an insight in this. Review demo was given and a number of things are still unclear – the demo has to be improved. Overall, seismology VO must be managed more tightly by Contractor-ULAKBIM, NA4 leader and VO leader.

Environmental VO workshop brought together representatives from Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Croatia, Albania and Hungary, who all presented their work. Environmental VO manager presented overall VO progress, with metrics reaching the targets, accounting details presented, as well as first scientific results. The support structure was presented. Following this, the detailed status of the applications was given. Again, work of 3rd parties in applications needs to be understood better by the VO leader. Specifically regarding applications: ROMS needs to find international collaborations, MD needs to increase involvement with BG applications, GENESI-DR collaboration has to be further evaluated, and EGEE-GENESI-DR MoU analysed for the issue of certificates and data access; Moldovan application deployment timeline to be provided ASAP. Demo application is satisfactory.

  • In SA1, the presentation was given as for review, with objectives and metrics; followed by tasks, milestones and deliverables. Infrastructure development was presented – with a convenient map which was decided will be used in all Activity presentations. This was followed by core services, CA deployment status, infrastructure expansion, infrastructure management and tools, details of operations, SLA principles and statistics, infrastructure usage, status of link to Moldova, and status of interoperations. Some suggestions have been made for the presentation and Dusan has noted them and will implement them. Regarding discrepancies in resources commitments, it was agreed that all countries will provide explanations to the SA1 leader. Status of action points was revised and there are still too many open action points pending for a long time. A set of new action points was defined, related to the review and beyond.

  • JRA1 presentation was not prepared as for review (only ToC was given), and only covered current work and plans; not very well structured. The status of deliverables and metrics was given, all are met. DJRA1.3 results were discussed, and the status of AS/OTs was given, as well as documentation guidelines. An ongoing issue with reporting was identified – it should be precise and on time. JRA1 wiki needs to be filled by all developers; and applications should use the applications services and operational tools. Next, JRA1 metrics were presented and it was suggested that they should start being used every 3 months. At review, JTS will be demoed with environmental VO, SDSAS with seismo VO, and it is still pending what will be demoed with meteo VO. A set of reccomendations and actions was identified by teh JRA1 leader and JRA1 developers should consult the JRA1 presentation and follow these. It was decided no detailed action points need to be kept per AS/OT, and that general actions are also not useful, this being development work. The upcoming plans were discussed, and then details of developments were given for just couple of AS/OTs, where others didn’t provide input, which is not acceptable.
