Pedagogy Group, Self Learning and Problem Solving Exercises Active learning has received considerable attention over the past several years. One of the many purposes of higher education is to develop students as critical thinkers and lifelong learners. The students develop a personal sense of self, which influences their self-directedness in learning and contributes to their personal development. Free exchange of ideas among the group members through discussion and presentation not only leverage on time, idea exchange and effort but also enhances teaching and communication skills. Problem solving is a skill that is central to engineering practice. As a consequence, developing skills in solving such problems is imperative for engineering graduates. Essential to such learning is an ease of communication and allows students to address the issues at hand with the help of terminology, attitudes, humor and empathy.
