SNO NRP Steering Committee Notes

Meeting Mon. 10/17/05

SNO Office
Attended: Susan Kulstad, Paul Ruhland, Kirsten Rome, Michael Romens - CHP, Stacy Sorenson, Sheryl, Elsa, Jeremy and Ben (Sheridan neighbors)

NEXT MEETING NOV. 21st: Topic will be Business Involvement in the Arts District. 13th Avenue businesses and representatives of art organizations (NEMAA, NE Arts Action Plan) will be invited (John & Susan).
ART-A-WHIRL SURVEY RESULTS
The group looked over the results, and noted these should be viewed in conjunction with the original Bus Stop & other survey results. Ask John if these include the Community Health Fair or any others. That said, the results hold themes familiar from the initial Sheridan 2015 neighborhood planning meeting. Susan offered a summary:
Neighborhood Guidelines for New Development: affordability, support live /work space for artists, connect to the river, green standards, make community that is safe to walk & bike, public art.
13th Avenue (“Arts Avenue”) Master Plan: links people socially & connects to the river, green it up, support public art, pedestrian friendly that is safe w/ street lighting & local, affordable businesses that appeal to local use.
Youth Programs
Develop Riverbank Park: Safe walking & bike paths, public art, opportunity to link people recreationally & socially, youth.
Fund Home Improvement

YOUTH & BUILDING COMMUNITY
Kirsten gave an overview of ideas she is working on, focused on youth ages 12 – 16 years-old. She invited Sheryl (16) & her daughter, Elsa (12), who will participate in development along with other kids & adults she is reaching out to. The group asked questions and added ideas:
Virtual Community Web Site: Concept is a safe space giving kids creative, engaging ethical alternatives to other choices out there for kids with spare time and little guidance. Partners so far are New City School, Sheryl, Elsa and a number of other kids & adults giving input. The design will involve kids 12 – 16. Ideas so far include ethical employment opportunities, theatrics including tumbling, escape from school subjects /atmosphere, and a community theme. Sites kids visit include EverythingGirl.com, cartoonNetwork.com, sheridanschool.org, and AlbinoBlacksheep.com (violent).
Project is in search of a hosting web site (suggestion to ask John about SNO neighborhood site).
Suggestions to incorporate: where appropriate other initiatives & ideas for youth and for other portions of SNO’s plan; info on democracy in action where we live; health alternatives & environmental health info with CHP (dental, health, lead paint, mural project, etc.).
Youth Reps on SNO Board &/or Youth Advisory Board: Kirsten would like to move on this now, will contact Jenny.
Community Restorative Justice: Elsa proposed an idea for having e.g., if a man talks bad to a kid in the neighborhood, bullying kids, or alcoholic disrupts the neighborhood, they appear before others in the neighborhood to answer for it. Suggestion to seek a funded partner, e.g., UMN to consider pursuing this idea; Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) award-winning tools for bullying called “Teaching Tolerance.”
Park: Safe place to go. Folks who hadn’t yet seen the plan for Sheridan’s river park took a look. Kirsten’s outreach ideas on this: fishing pier & dance stand.
Other ideas raised through Kirsten’s outreach or at this meeting:

  • More patrols looking for teen drinking parties

  • Dances

  • Carpool

  • School dances

  • Clothing store offering affordable & organic clothes for teens

  • Address bike theft – use computer chip to trace stolen bikes. Elsa said she has had 3 bikes stolen.

Community Health Program: Michael gave a description of the program and handed out info. Ideas on linkage with CHP were part of the above discussion.
