SOS 320 CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES IN SOCIOLOGY (4-0 ) 4 4 AKTS
The aim of this course is to give basic information about the contemporary developments in sociological theories which are significant in social research studies. Here the question of how and from which perspectives social problems of modern societies are examined and evaluated becomes crucial. In this context, field theory of Bourdieu, an important scholar of contemporary sociology; communicative action theory of Habermas; and structuration theory of Giddens who analyzes the structure/agency duality, will be discussed in this course. Moreover, risk society theory of Beck who relates it to industrialization and mass consumption; network society theory of Castells who examines the transformations emerging as a result of communication Technologies; and Sennett’s theory of corrosion of character which is relatable to developments in capitalism, will be discussed. Lastly, Zizek’s approach to social theory which is affected by the philosophy of Hegel and psychoanalysis of Lacan and Harvey’s approach to postmodernism will be discussed. The main framework of the course includes the perspectives of above mentioned social theorists to the contemporary societies.

SOS 420 SOCIAL RESEARCHES ON ZONGULDAK (3-0 ) 3 4 AKTS
This course has three parts. In the first part, Zonguldak’s economic, political, social and cultural life will be presented in a historical narrative. In the second part, this historical narrative will be associated with migration, identity, social space, urban transformation, urban division, political tendencies, social policy, and urban identity of Zonguldak. For the third part of the course, students supposed to plan small research on Zonguldak and after that findings will be discussed.
SOS 422 SPACE AND SOCIETY (3-0 ) 3 4 AKTS
Spatial practices have relations with the social practices as it is the case with all other practices. Social identities and spatial experiences determine and shape each other. Within the context of this course, we will follow the traces of our experiences, belongings and exclusions ranging from micro spaces to macro spaces and we will try to analyse forms of relationships between society and space. A certain literatüre will be used for this aim but we will also refer to the testimonies of people by in-depth interviews about their spatial practices.
