CHPTER EIGHT

WRITING IN ART AND ABOUT ART AS A MEANS OF ENTERTAINNIG THE TOURISTS IN TOURISM INDUSTRY

Writing about art, in art, art producers or makers of art in Nigeria has become the job of everybody especially the non-artists who know nothing about or in art. Therefore, the progress that is expected to be gained is very minimal in terms of the write-up they are presenting to the public. The write-up is often created more problems to art practice, arts, the practitioners and the society at large. This is so because those artists so called are selected from nowhere to hold different private and public posts or helms of affairs of the present day and past era of government who have neglected their artistic duties because of the tradition that brought them into the system they find themselves now.
A dynamic writer cannot be seen as an intelligent celebrity without the sense of meaningful skills and knowledge in his writing until effective reading and writing habit is cultivated as an issue in research is meaningfully put in place. This act is a missing concept of practice among art historians and studio arts practitioners in our various places of teaching, learning and art producing centers. In view of this, the act has been leading to low rate of qualitative and meaningful contributions to art and artists development to be precise, in Nigeria. In order to restore this academic artistic lapses, there is the need for all artists to embark on the effective means of reading and writing for the sake of a meaningful academic pursue in the presentation of a well meaningful perpetual ideas, concepts and awareness concerning art, artists and the products of art in our society.
The idea of effective writing in terms of hot cake write-up centers on sound skills and meaningful knowledge of writing. The target of this act of behavioral concept in art and its practice is to standardize the position of art, artists and products of art in the areas of effective teaching and learning, cogent criticism and fluency in communication in terms of artistic presentation of different issues concerning art.

The Goals of Writing as an Issue in Research in Aid of Effective Art Practice and Presentation

In this vein, the idea of writing states the goals of writing in aid of visual concept as a channel to understand the general programs of arts practice focusing on hand and brain for the creation of new thing. These goals include:



  • Provision of a broad based knowledge and skills designed to sharpen PhD Degree holders’ in communication skills in the areas of learning, teaching and writing.

  • Realization of the needs for cross-fertilization of ideas and the inter- relationship of the various disciplines for the encouragement of arts practice.

  • Bridging the gap between literary and scientific aspects of research through visual understanding and interpretation of art practice and its works.

  • To inculcate the idea of national loyalty and understanding based on an awareness of the nation’s roots and cultural previous circumstances in arts and its practice. Thus enabling artists to clutch our societal morals norms, national aspirations, values and problems as represented visually in manner of taught that will determine what will be created for the milieu (Lowenfeld, 2010).

The purpose of writing in art as an issue in research was designed to develop the mind and focal concept of perception of the artists in order to broaden their minds in the areas of acquisition of knowledge and skills. The concept of writing as a body of research defines the total ability of an abstract or general idea inferred or derived from specific instances of cognitive process of acquiring skills or knowledge for the enhancement of a meaningful doing in our society (Lowenfeld, 2010). This concept is to equip the artists in order to acquire vital and useful knowledge and skills under acceptable conditions for the promotion and re-affirmation of their various aspects of life endeavor.


Before further discussion, it will be better to know the status of a writer in the context of message dissemination in terms of writing in art or about in our society. According to John Holt in Andrew Pollard et al (John, 2011).looks at a writer in the act of disseminating certain message in the context of the perspective of the reader and draws an attention to the ways in which the milieu can create an avenue for readers and writers to express their feels in order to be bold to make meaningful contributions to the happenings in the society in angle of arts. He affirms that the writer and the readers in the society are learners who are learning to make themselves dependent on what they read and write as a point of adding to the means of developing their previous knowledge and skill for arts presentation in order to change the society for the best (John, 2011).This will make the two fashions have confidence of trust in their own perceptions as a way of correcting their own mistakes for the achievement of the past, present and future in their society.
The Materials Needed for Writing in Aid of Art Practice/ Presentation

Material is another major need in aid of writing in the pursuant of a meaningful academic arts practice and presentation. The materials shall be broken into two: the experience, knowledge, practice and documents written by scholarly authorities within and abroad (Benthal, 2011). The personal materials: experience, knowledge and practice can be a useful context for writing certain fact through visual concept. Although, people are skeptical on how can ordinary personal materials as an environment of human’s perception that consist of experience, knowledge and practice seen as an instrumental to writing certain facts either in art or about art in our advance society (Benthal, 2011).


Nevertheless, they belief that if a personal material that contains necessary paraphernalia of the content for a meaningful writing-up, it could be useful for the enhancement of effective academic art practice and presentation. But many Nigerian art practitioners in our institutions of higher learning and practice either public or private sectors, the personal material scenario is un-acceptable to serve as a means or source of information for writing in art or about art due to lack of scholarly facts (Bastranw, 2008). The personal material is not only lacking facts but also lacks standard means of both logical and lateral thinking in the presentation of the message that is intending to be presented in the write-up.
It is sad to note that reading as a body of writing by the Nigerian artists is confined to the classroom or studio only. To them, the concept of writing belongs to literary teachers: English Language only where they can be seen as newspaper and scholarly written books worms that will be of good help to them in the act of understanding what is written in genre (Bastranw, 2008). The document is another form of material that is peculiar to reading and writing as a channel or road map to sound academic art practice and presentation in our society. It serves as a guide to teachers, students and administrators of art practice in order to attain the desired academic art goal in their milieu. Should a document be a means to an end or an end to a means in academic art practice and presentation? This is a bordering issue in research in the area of reading and writing. It should be a means to an end because it needs to be put in place in order to guild the teachers and students of art practitioners to attain certain information during the process of reading and writing (Bastranw, 2008). Artist needs to be creative, resourceful, articulate and industrious in the areas of reading and writing. In this view, the term document simply means blue-print or publication that contains the academic theme of facts of what the teachers and the students of art are expected to back up their research findings within a specify period in aid of their writing (Adedeji, 2009).
It is geared towards perpetuating the social, economic, political cultural and ethical values of a nation in which the academic concept of art will be derived. Such material is capable to be used in order to actualize the national development and the world at large (Adedeji, 2009). This growth and development in aid of quality academic art practice in writing basically lies on the effective use of the ideas of both language and visual syntax as an issue in research. This will enable the citizens and government to be aware of the essence of research through effective writing in our life for the encouragement of behavioral changes among teachers and students of art practice in our milieu (Bordorn, 2010).

Analysis

This piece of polymeric painting shows the essence of reading and writing in studio practice as an act of research for the development of media, technique of usage and style of presentation as an embodiment of artistic ideology in an academic setting. The use of this developing medium in painting is practically different from the conventional known media in painting studio practice: Oil Paints, Pastels, Water Colours, Tempera, Gauche and the likes in the aspect of technique of application, style of operation and presentation. Besides, the aesthetic component is tent to be unique. This will give divergent areas of interest in writing for many Critics who may like to talk with their pen in other to bring to the hearing of many citizenries the happenings in the studio of the current studio practitioners.


The objectives of Writing as a Body of Research

  • To enable the teachers and the student of art be aware of the theoretical aspects of the academic target.

  • To make the teachers and the students of art discover new ideas in academic art practice either in the area of exploration or re-modernization of the existing media, technique and style.

  • To balance up the distance between the so called linguists and non linguistic teachers and students in both arts and other fields of life.

  • To promote the quality and the quantity of critic ability among academic practitioners in the areas arts in order to show-casing their talent of productivities in writing (Bordorn, 2010). Effective writing as an element of research is believed to be the result of visual literacy in an academic environment which stands as the pillar for individual nation and world growth and development.


A Short History of Art Practice in Nigerian Schools

In view of the historical background of art in Nigeria which gains an entrance into primary, secondary and tertiary schools through the Nigerians contemporary art masters: Aina Onobolu, Kenneth Murray to mentions but a few were made to know that the first practice of art in Nigeria was an informal system of education which was introduced through part-times or sandwich program as courses in art. This was set up in Yaba technical institute but not Yaba College of Technology. Those who were engaged then were the people who are working and eventually called commercial artists. After their training some went back to their places of work while others remained in the street for local commercial art duties without taking writing in or about art as a point of duty in their daily art practice.


Later, the Yaba Institute introduced main stream European study of art in training people in the sandwich program. Most of the teachers were thought art which were used in government offices and churches. This program was blown up that led to the establishment of Nigerian Science and Technology at Ibadan in which the same pattern of training took place in Yaba institute. It was later moved to Amadu Bello University, Zaria, where the training was academically battled. Therefore, in the program, the training was centered on practical art content that will be needed to develop industrial views considering the levels of industries at that time. Later it was developed to award Diploma in Art. The instructors then had little or no knowledge and ideas of art history, art appreciation, art anthropology and criticism which did not give the trainees the opportunity to have the ideas of writing about or in art. Even the people who started the art school then were not taught in line with the basis of theory, besides Uche Okeke is a product of that art school.
Therefore, if Artists in Nigerian are afraid of writing or they don’t like writing and they are thinking that art is not a thing to write about. And eventually believe that art is a doing thing. Which ascertain in what every Nigerian artists are carrying about this can not ever progress art practice, the art products and the artists in any way. The idea of split brain shows that human brain is of two sections: the right and the left hemisphere, that the right hemisphere deals with logical thinking of science ideology and the left hemisphere of lateral thinking that deals with doing of practical work of the artists in the areas of natural studies like the syntax of visual literacy that deals with writing and talking about or in whatever we have produced in art.
Most of this kind of thinking is found in the polytechnic art sections where art history is not taken with critical means of teaching and learning. Many artist have failed to be using their state of thinking in writing about or in their work, environment but have taken art to be hand craft. Jackson Pollok an action painter, whenever he is asked to talk to or about his painting, he normally fails to talk but he will be looking because he beliefs that artists do not write nor talk about, in or to their work. His belief is that, what is the need for an artist talks to his works because art work needs to speak for its self. (Egonwa, 2012).

If the artists can be talking and writing about or in art it will make the art lovers and the enemies of art understand art and its practice much better than before in our society. If we are talking about the audience of art either the lovers or the enemies of art we are not talking about those who buy art work, but we are talking about those who will support art in the industries either at the federal, states or local government level in the areas of allocation for the effective practice of art in our milieu. In view of this, many governors have removed art as a subject of study in schools in their state schools either in the primary, secondary or even in the higher institutions of learning and fail to finance art right from the onset of primary to university level of education because there is no body to educate them concerning the essence of art as a subject in schools. For instance, a very big art work has been pulled down in Muritala Muhammad Air Port, Lagos no artist has ever spoken at all on such a sad issue in Nigeria art realm but only Dele Jegede has written many papers against that nonsense act in Nigerian (Egonwa, 2012).

This problem can only be solved until the artists are aware about the damage they have been doing on art. This awareness needs proper presentation in order to enable the society sees fact in art and try to project meaningful solutions through writing in or about art in our society. This will help us to know the best way to think as to talk about them which will eventually help to impact in some set of people in the society that will help to move art to the greatest height. This will give art and the artists a good reputation in the milieu. The artists should try to protect their reputations in the society so that there won’t be a different between a medical doctor and an artist in the society of ours.

Therefore, they should not refer to an artist as an ordinary person when it comes to a matter that concerns artist and the society. For instance, a journal wanted to be launched in Delta State University, Abraka, in the Faculty of Art in which the Edition-in-Chief was to be appointed the then dean said that the faculty had appointed a profession although he is an artist in person of Profession O.D. Egonwa from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts. The offer was rejected because of the appellation of although that was attached to an artist that eventually the publication of the journal during the tenure of the dean faculty of art was not realized. (Egonmen, 2012).

In an academic behavioral concept of human development in writing skill, two things need to be put into consideration: you should know how to speak very well and how to make research very well. In this content we are learning about the act of writing in art or about art when the knowledge of PhD lessons have purposefully acquired. As a means of writing in or about art, there are some vital requirements that must be put in place:


  • Appropriate use of language and its syntax

  • Your words must be under minded i e choice of words, phrase, sentences, paragraph in terms of proper use of dictation.

  • Proper use of writing techniques in art.

  • You must define your subject matter that deals with the content (issue or the problem) in which a writing is been built up. There are two contents in writing: (i) Formal content (ii) non formal content. These two forms of content is lodging concept of subject matter that will be fully explained through experience in terms of the use of knowledge (intelligent) as a body of inspiration and perspiration in research.

ART AS VISUAL CONCEPT OF WRITING IN TOURISM INDUSTRY

In a critical writing, it is philosophically wise and too wide to say that art is life because it belongs to a lay man conceptual feeling concerning art and its definition in terms of meaning and its concept. Art is a broad field of human idea, aspiration and feeling that agreed with the total quality of human environment. For instant, a philosophical digressive about art can be felt in 1997 when Professor Egonwa was called to represent the dean of the faculty of arts during an academic discussion, after the discussion, the V C called for refreshment, at the setting, Professor Egonwa kept quiet, at a point one among the professors on seat said that young man in a red cap did not talk since we have been discussing.
Professor Egonwa responded that I am not in a red cap but the professor said, are you not in a red cap? Professor Egowan replied yes, because that might be what you saw on me that I am putting on a red cap whether it is red or not, I cannot say. The professor replied why did you say that? Professor Egowan answered, that, objects do not have colours of their own. That is, object takes the colorant of the wave that is produced by the ray of light at the time such an object was noticed. Therefore, it may be at the time you were looking at my cap the reddish ray of light might have reflected on it. In view of that, I am not putting on a red cap (Egonwa, 2012). At that point, the discussion changed and art and artists was tent to be noticed due to the philosophical presentation of art by the art representative; Professor Egonwa in that discussion.

This shows that the rate at which the non artists look at art, the artists and their art products is highly prejudiced. It is the duty of the art practitioner to explain what art really means to the audiences and the people who are the lovers or enemies of art. In view of this, if a composition of writing is been made, it should be composed according to the level of the understanding of the audience that will listen to such a write-up in order to enable them vividly understand the contents there in. With this simple analysis, art can be defined as a process and product of human expression. It can also be a process of bringing establishment into the ordinary in order to reach aesthetic pleasure (Egowan, 2012). It can also be a detail concern of forms and images that could be felt. Therefore, art is of different forms of visual concept; painting, graphics, textile, sculpture to mention but a few. But in this case, we are highly concerned with the visual art. In this content of writing, you are expected to define and personalize the content of the topic that are writing on in order to give a vivid meaning of the theme you are presenting or writing about or in. This can be done in the initial part of your write-up at the middle of your writing as a means of operationally balance the topic; ‘Art, economic and national cohesion’ this will enable the readers to understand what you mean or have in mind. This is a conceptual dimension in the area of time that normally monitors the concept of effective writing. Therefore, in writing language idea, wisdom and meaningful perception of human experience are needed.


In this junction, the idea is normally contextually framed with the needed words to convey the message. It means a special pattern on which write –up will follow. For instance if you are writing a conference paper on “art Economy and national cohesion”, this idea can be clearly accumulated in a book called How Europe Developed Africa, in the book, the idea of contextual frame work is the trend of colonialism which centers on European education at the expense of African culture.
The Ideas of Critical Writing in Art and about Art

In the context of writing as a means of research either about art or in art it centers on how the artists can help to correct the grammatical mistakes of the linguists through the idea of visual syntax. But nobody can correct the practical expect of a studio practice because the maker has an internal motif for what he has made which can be best interpreted by him. The moment a non artist is given the opportunity to correct the drawing or any other aspect of the practical concept of a studio practice; it shows that a big problem is highly imminent (Egonua, 2012). In writing, the writer needs meaningful and enthusiastic materials to untie his ideas to back up his writing toward the idea of critical understanding and analysis of his content. In such writing the idea of variable must be put into consideration. These variables are grouped into dependent in independent variable which helps to make writing possible.


The theoretical frames work in a research work is regarded as a model or pattern in which research work is planned upon. In the production of an art work, there is what is called boarder line: Isoko and Irobo have similar art works that cornet the two villages or communities together which is regarded as boarder line. It also occurs in language that is found common in the dialect of two communities i.e. in Ondo and Akokoedo where common Yoruba words as ideas are commonly used between the two communities: Edo speaking people and the Yoruba speaking people.
Writing in Art

In view of your mission to be an artist in knowledge, skills and practice you should be a person who is writing in art and about art aiming the target of enabling the public to understand art and all things in and about art in terms usage, making and practice. He or she needs not to be willing to have all what he or she wants but to elevate his or her mission as an art writer (Egonwa, 2012). An art writer is an ordinary writer like those who write novel, play, poetry, news or other form of writing, but a person who have clear understand of visual understand of communication between syntax and figures or images will be a better writer in or about art. While the best writer in art and about art is a well trained person in art practice (Bordorn, 2010).


In views of this, an art writer should be very fast in grammatical structure in terms of language syntax and be able to expresses his or her feelings in line with art that he or she is writing in or about. Due to the lack of knowledge and skills of art writing by many artists, they have made the non-artist to take the mantle of writing about art or in art as a business in their various places of work: News Paper Industry and other places of it kind. Such people are news press-men and women in broadcasting companies and some borrowed artists who were not trained as artists, art writer or artists without artistic writing skills and academic art writing ideology like Mufu Onifade. If the PhD in studio and art history can be acquired co-heartedly with fast knowledge and skills of writing the ideas of writing in art and about art will be a thing of the highest impression in our society.
A writer about art or in art must be sure of the following areas:

* The society and its problems

* The ideas involved in art and work. (The element in the work.)

* Acceptable means of presentation.

*Language structure in the areas of language and visual syntax

* Collocation and figurative use of words.

* Ways of solving the problems of the society.

People do neither know what art is all about nor understand art on its own or as a work. It is the duty of the art writer to make the people or the entire society have the full idea, knowledge and understand of art, artist, and their works of art. This can be effectively carried out if the six basic ideas are fully understood and put into practice by art writer. A good reader may be a good writer or a good writer is the best reader because when a writer is writing he or she is eventually reading (Otto, 1998). The unity should be designed in line with the background theory or focal theory and what is intended to be contributed.
