It is particularly encouraging to note that papers presented at conferences increased overall by 7%. A total of 45 papers were presented from which 33 were at international conferences. It should be noted that many young and novice researchers attended conferences for the first time. The amount of journal articles published increased by 21%. Although the amount of international published journal articles decreased, DOE listed articles increased by 33% and other peer reviewed articles increased by a huge margin of 400%. There was however a remarkable decrease of 50% in the number of books and book chapters written and published. Masters and Doctoral studies completed shown an increase of 16%. It should be noted that there were 11 doctorates promoted by supervisors in the School. Treatises completed decreased with 10%. Other outputs such as talks and magazine publications also decreased. It appears that the research outputs of the School are very satisfactory, although contributions are made only by a handful of staff members. Most of these categories of outputs were however higher than the goals/targets set for 2013.

Barriers and constraints
The main barriers to meeting the 2012 goals/targets relate to the lack of competent research and administrative support. The lack of a competent researcher (such as a retired academic) who could screens M & D students’ research proposals before they are allocated to supervisors was also highlighted as a barrier to increasing research outputs. Poorly written research proposals delay the process and leads to a great deal of frustration among colleagues. Capacity to act as supervisors is also a constraint as many staff members are overextended.

5. Highlights and special achievements

  • Thirty three papers were presented at international conference as far as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Florida, Michigan and Seychelles.

  • Five papers won best paper or runner-up awards at various conferences.

  • Dr J Kruger received the Faculty Emerging Researcher 2013 Award.

  • Prof EE Smith received the Faculty Sustainability/Green Researcher 2013 Award.

  • Prof S Farrington received the Faculty Reseacher of the Year Award.

6. Finances

6.1 Financial review

  • No council funds for the NMMU are used at all.

  • Projects are financed by the individual researchers themselves, either from personal research allocations, own equity or donations.

  • Post-graduate candidates pay for the paper, postage, toner and duplicating costs.

  • The income and expenditure statements are administered via the NMMU financial system.

  • No cash is withdrawn from the UAMS in the form of salaries by the members of the UAMS.

  • Surpluses generated by the UAMS are reinvested in research projects and are also used to attend national and international research conferences.

8. Mandatory summary for Senate
The Unit for Applied Management Sciences (UAMS) represents the research pillar of the School of Management Sciences. The reason for the existence of the UAMS is to act as the consulting and research arm for the various departments comprising the School of Management Sciences (Business Management, Logistics, Marketing Management as well as Management and Entrepreneurship). All staff members of the School of Management Sciences are ipso facto also members of the UAMS. The Unit strives to develop socially and technologically competent professionals from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds through sustaining, generating and imparting advanced knowledge by means of research, consulting, teaching and networking. The governance structure (Committee) of the Unit of Applied Management Sciences consists of seven members. Members of the Unit had the following research outputs in 2013: 45 international and national conference papers; 23 journal articles; 4 books and book chapters; 22 Masters and Doctoral degrees completed and 26 BCom/BTech treatises completed. Members received various research-related awards and grants. The closing balance of the Unit is R65 371.57.
