The “eye” petroglyphs of Rano Raraku
Two seasons of survey (2013–14) have focused on the identification and detailing of circa 30 eye
petroglyphs located within
Rano Raraku statue quarry, Rapa Nui. The paper considers the eyes'
morphology, their
contexts within the quarry, and the use and meaning
of the eye motif on the
Island. There are a range of eye petroglph‐types at Rano Raraku. These
occur in different places
within the quarry, there is a spatial association between eye petroglyphs and moai removal. The eyes
