Surah Al-Asr Tafsir

Every surah in the Quran has a story. In class you are memorizing the surah Al-Asr. Read the story of this surah and then practice memorizing the ayahs.

Tell me a story about Surah Al-Asr!

Surah Al-Asr was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad(saw) in the city of Mecca. One story about this surah I want to tell you is about a man named Amr bin Al-As. He was a friend of the Prophet Muhammad. Before he became Muslim, he visited his friend, Musaylimah Al-Khadhab and talked to him about this religion of Islam. He told Musaylimah about Surah Al-Asr and his friend Musaylimah tried to make up some poetry and say it was also sent to him from Allah. But we know that the Quran was not sent to anyone except Prophet Muhammad and that it is not poetry. Amr bin Al-As knew that too. He knew that what Musaylimah said was made up and that he lying.

Another thing you should know about this surah, is that whenever two Muslim friends meet, they always read Surah Al-Asr together before leaving. You should try and say Surah Al-Asr to your Muslim friends before you leave.

What is Surah Al-Asr about?

In this first few ayahs of this surah, Allah tells us about human beings and how they are losing. What are they losing? They’re losing Jannah because they are not believing, obeying, and praying to Allah. We don’t want to lose Jannah!

In the third ayah Allah tells us about the humans who believe in Allah and work on doing good deeds. In the last two ayahs He tells us about the people who tell other people to do good deeds and tell each others to be patient. Patient means to wait for something to happen or for something to go away without acting mad or bad. Being patient is good. These people will get Jannah! 

Practice saying Surah Al-Asr!
