I. The content of science
The goal of teaching science is to familiarize students with the theoretical and empirical foundations of cognitive psychology. The tasks of the science are to expand and deepen basic knowledge by involving experimental psychological, neurophysiological and clinical information, philosophy of mind, linguistics, cultural anthropology, as well as approaches to modeling cognition in the field of computer and artificial intelligence systems, which are assimilated within the framework of the departments of perception, thinking, attention and memory of psychology.
II. The main theoretical part (lecture sessions)
II.I. The subject includes the following topics:
1. Cognitive psychology: concept, history, main directions of research
The concept of cognitive psychology. Information processing model. History of cognitive psychology. Basic problems of cognitive psychology. S. Sternberg's paradigm. Cognitive science, neuroscience and cognitive psychology. The Evolution of Cognitive Psychology. From cognitive psychology to subject psychology. The main results of the study of cognitive processes and characteristics.
2. Cognitive science: foundations of emergence
Major philosophical traditions (mechanistic natural cognition, empiricism and rationalism, critique of self-observation and pure reason). Early experimental psychology, methodical approaches of G. Helmholtz, G. Fechner and F. Donders; Views of W. Wundt; crisis in scientific psychology. Behavioral and physicalist direction - the science of behavioral psychology, the science of Gestalt, the second crisis in the science of psychology. Romanticism and positivism, natural philosophy and neuropsychology, physiology, psychology of activity.
Information approach - cybernetics and statistical communication theory, engineering psychology, search for bandwidth limitations. Analogy with mental models and computer. Cognitive psychology of U. Neysser. Principles of symbolic approach. Cognitive modularity and connectionism.
3. Cognitive neuroscientist
Concept of cognitive neuroscience. Brain mapping and research. The problem of psyche and body. Cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Nervous system, brain, neuron. Modern methods of neurophysiology (magnetic resonance imaging, exoplanar tomography, computer axial tomography, positron emission tomography).
