Encouraging Students to Participate: How to Help Shy Students Speak Up
2.5.1 The Concepts of Suggestopedia Method Suggestopedia method is an old method from Java, but fits into the current approach to teach communicative languages in remote areas. This can increase students' speaking skills in class. There had been some previous similar studies. A course that applied suggestopedia had been conducted in bright and cheerful classroom. One of the fundamental principles of the method is that when students are relaxed and confident. They will not need hard effort to learn language (Larsen-Freeman, 2000). By applying suggestopedia method, students will be confident to speak and express their ideas and feelings.
2.5.2 The Objectives of Suggestopedia Method The aims of the suggestopedia method in teaching English, especially teaching speaking skill, are to increase students' knowledge and interest, help 11 them develop and practice new language skills and behaviors in a nonthreatening setting, and lift their motivation and involvement needed for the learning process. (Saunur sited Januariza, 2016) said that suggestopedia is a method created by Georgi Lozanov in in1970s and is commonly referred to as an affective-humanistic approach. This teaching method applies the study of suggestions to help students get rid of nervousness, fear, and so on. Thus, this method can help them learn and train their speaking skills. The primary purpose of suggestopedia is to tap students' mental potential to speed up learning process of target language.
2.5.3 Procedures to Implement Suggestopedia in Teaching Speaking To apply the suggestopedia method, teacher must make several procedures so that the learning process can run well in the classroom. This method has four stages; presentation stage, concert session (active and passive concert), passive repetition, and practice stage performance (Lazanov, 2005). 1. Presentation stage The main purpose of this stage is to help students relax and move into a positive frame of mind with a feeling that the learning process will be easy and fun. 2. Concert session The concert session phase consists of active and passive sessions. In the active session, the teacher reads the text or dialogue at a normal speed and 12 then asks students to follow. During the passive session, students relax and listen to the teacher reading the text or dialogue. In this session, Baroque music is played in the background. 3. Passive repetition The teacher gives students the opportunity to understand what they have learned on the active stage of the concert. In addition, teacher may continue the music at this stage. 4. Practice stage After the second concert, students leave class quietly. They were not given any homework but the teacher asked to skim once before going to bed and again before getting up in the morning.
