Mercaptosuccınıc Acıd-Ce(IV) Inıtıator
In this study, by using mercaptosuccinic acid – cerium sulfate initiator system in the presence of ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt (EDTA4Na), the synthesize and swelling behaviors of crosslinked acrylamide – lithium metacrilade ionic hydrogels were investigated. N-N’-methylen bis(acrylamide) was used as crosslinker. The purpose of using of mercaptosuccinic acid-ceryum sulfate initiator system is to synthesize hydrogels at low temperatures.
Swelling values and swelling equilibrium values of synthesized hydrogels in distilled water decreased with increase of the amount of crosslinker and with decrease of hydrophylic monomer content in hydrogel.
Depending on time, the swelling behaviors of the synthesized hydrogels containing crosslinker and different amounts of ionic monomer were examined. The kinetic rate parameters were determined from the obtained swelling data as depending on time. When swelling kinetics of hydrogels in distilled water were investigated, two types of difussion mechanisms were observed. The types of difussion mechanism of hydrogels with LiMA and without LiMA were found as non-Fickian and Fickian, respectively.
Use of hydrogels including ionic groups to remove copper (Cu) ions from aqueous solutions was investigated depending on the concentration of copper, amount of ionic hyrogels, time, temperature and pH. The absorption of Cu(II) in hydrogel of crosslinked LiMA-AAm increased with increase in pH (4, 6, 7), absortion time (2min, 4min, 6min, 25min, 40min, 60min, 10min, 15min), initial Cu(II) concentration (0.04M, 0.06M, 0.1M, 0.2M, 0.3M) and the amount of hydrogel (0.02g, 0.03g, 0.05g, 0.1g, 0.15g, 0.2g, 0.3 g), but the absorption of Cu(II) in this hydrogel didn’t change with increase in temperature (20•C, 30•C, 40•C, 50•C).
