Personalized Mobile English Learning with Self Regulation Assistance
In this paper, a mobile English learning assistant system with text-reading, word annotation and word quizes, was proposed, by considering prevalancy of mobile devices and lacking of m-learning applications. Users’ levels are determined via a proficiency test. Difficulty of a text is estimated by blending lexical difficulty levels within the text and Flesch reading ease value of the text, and by using maximum information strategy the most favorable five texts are recommended for the user. Nevertheless, annotated words from the text are asked to the user in a quiz with a simple and effective formulization. User’s review of his/her development progress is ensured to encourage one’s self-regulation side. After the development of the software, 25 different users were provided to use the application for 5 days long. At the end of the trial, users are given a survey. Application is determined to be efficient and working in a desired way as a result of the survey. Consequently, the main aim, which is teaching English by text reading on mobile devices, is achieved.
