Determination And Control Of Water Losses In Water Distribition Systems: A Case Study For İstanbul City
Due to raise in population, rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization water consumption increases and causes decrease in water resources. As a result of expanding water demand and diminishing existing water resources, water utilities has started to look for new resources. The financial burden of producing water from new water resources has obliged water utilities to find ways to decrease non revenue water.
This study focuses on non-revenue water problem. First, the water resources potential of Turkey is presented and then the components of non-revenue water are described. Performance indicators of non-revenue water and water losses are investigated. Some methods for determining and reducing the water losses are given. The existing studies for some municipalities in Turkey and the world about water losses are provided.
At some using points without any measuring device in the network, measuring devices installed for sometime and flows were measured from this measuruments anual usage at these palaces were calculated. The billed quantity of water and other amounts of water determined by calculation substructed from the produced amount of water the difference then, is considered as due to the water losses or illegal usage of water from the network.
Bakırköy district located at the city center of İstanbul have been selected as pilot area within the scope of this study and water loss-leakage ratios of the existent potable water network in this pilot work area have been determined. Studies on Bakırköy district has given succesful results. In this study the persentage of loss water in Bakırköy district was found as 20.13. However the actual loss percentage. the physical loss percentage, was determined as about 10%.
If the study on pilot region was applied to whole Istanbul, this percentage is expected to decrease.
