The Effect Of Programming On Middle School Students’ Thinking Styles


This thesis examined the effect of programming on 6th grade middle school students’ thinking styles who were not expose to programming education before. Literature on similar studies have been examined for the study and the thinking style scale which has been invented by Sternberg and translated by Sünbül has been used. Moreover, these existing literature indicated programming education had different impacts on students. The review on existing literature initiates a curiosity and a need for examining the impact of programming on students’ thinking styles.
The researchers support the claim that porgramming education has an impact on digital natives thinking styles in the period of the increasing importance of the programming teaching, supporting this education at a very young ages and carrying campaigns. There is no study was recorded on programming education while reviewing the studies conducted in Turkey. This situation adds the importance and the uniqueness of the research.
After the examination of the various visual programming languages SCRATCH was chosen to utilesed as a tool in this thesis study. To this account, the syllabus of the course and lesson plans were created.
As a results of this study, an enhancement in thinking styles of the middle school students who had not any programming experience before is expected.
