The Research of the Possibilities of Outdoor Space Usage for Disabled Peole: The Example of İstanbul Universıty Beyazıt Campus
In order to ensure the participation of disabled individuals in public spaces the environmental conditions of these spaces should be improved. These individuals, which face barriers in many type of environments, have difficulties in the spaces of educational intuitions. In this study, Istanbul University’s Beyazıt Campus was selected as the study area. The current situation of Beyazıt Campus has been examined. Further, the problems of disabled individuals have been observed in terms of Campus’s outdoor usability and accessibility. In conclusion, the study offer recommendations in order to improve the accessibility and usability of the campus for all individuals.
Ensuring accesibility of disabled people in campus area will be possible with the reorganization and design of current uses and the new functions according to user requirements, specifications and standards. For this purpose; (1) pedestrian and vehicle circulation should be seperated in the campus, (2) guide tracks which are important especially for visually handicapped people, must provide continuity for transportation of all the areas and spaces, (3) parking places must be in appropriate number and place in the study area, (4) outfit elements locations should be reavaluated, (5) hand rail and banisters should be built for ramps and stairs.
