Investıgatıon of Küçükçekmece and Büyükçekmece Lagoons by Usıng Seısmıc and Bathymetrıc Methods

Büyükçekmece and Küçükçekmece Lagoons which are located on the shore of İstanbul (Trace) Peninsula of Marmara Sea, have bordered one each sandbar connection with this sea. Both of these lagoons, that exist in the area where Marmara Sea conjugates to the streams which place on the landside, are the parts of these streams which were covered by sea/freshwater.
Büyükçekmece Lagoon places afterwards of KarasuValen and Küçükçekmece lagoon joins to Sazlıdere. Büyükçekmece Lagoon became a pond full of fresh water at the present time because of the dam which was constructed behind the sandbar recently(or at the recent period). This lagoon changes according to the fill rate of the dam reservoir. It has approximately 12 km2 area and has smaller area than Küçükçekmece Lagoon that has nearly 16 k m2 area. Sandbars which border channels between the Lagoons and Marmara Sea naturally, are seen afterwards of the coastline at the Küçükçekmece Lagoon. Sediment deposits which separates Büyükçekmece Lagoon from Marmara Sea, located nearly in the middle of the depression which creates the lagoon. Viewed from this angle, Büyükçekmece Lagoon consists of two parts; the first part is internal part that is formed by Lagoon, and the second part is the external bay which is seen at the exit of Marmara Sea. In this thesis survey, geological evolution consist of two parts (Küçükçekmece and Büyükçekmece Lagoons) which are located in the North share of Marmara Sea is analyzed. Concerned about the evolution of these lagoons, using data obtained from inside of the lagoons and nearby their vicinity, a study has not been conducted previously. Comprehending geological evolution of lagoons contributes to learning geological evolution of this land side which İstanbul city exists on and solving geological problems which provides risk for urbanization at that location.
In this Project, evolution of Büyükçekmece and Küçükçekmece Lagoons is analysed by using high resolution seismic and bathymetric data gathered from inside of lagoons and the self of Marmara Sea. Beside these, for comparing inside of the lagoons and nearby its vicinity, geophysical, geological and geomorphological surveys are carried out.
