Control Of Volatile Metal Compounds During Waste Sludge Pyrolysis

Industry and technology are developing rapidly with the growing needs of the world population. During this development, the amounts of waste from industrial plants are also increasing. Control and recycling of these wastes are very important for Sustainable Development.

Galvanizing sludge has a high metal content. There are several ways to dispose of this sludge, one of these technologies is pyrolysis method. But in the disposal of sludge with thermochemical processes, volatile metal compounds poses problems in terms of air pollution.
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of pyrolysis with microwave preheating on the characteristics of volatile metal compounds. In order to control the behavior of volatile metal compounds, samples were preheated with microwave owen in different energy ranges and times. Thus, the effects of microwave pretreatment on the control of volatile metal were investigated. With industrial wastewater treatment plant sludge samples which has been done metal analysis and elemental analysis, pyrolysis experiments were performed after determining the initial conditions. The resulting solid products after pyrolysis were analyzed again, microwave preheating and pyrolysis effects on the metals were studied. Measurement of the gas product obtained from the pyrolysis experiments was made by the gas analyzer. Because it is except of the study’s aim, liquid products were weighed but not analyzed.
After microwave preheating and pyrolysis, an increase by the initial amount was observed in the weight percent of CaO, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 metal oxides which located in Galvano Technical Industry raw wastewater treatment sludge. Similar changes were detected in all samples applied 600 watt, 5 minutes preheating and pyrolysis. In this point, the weight percent of CaO, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 metal oxides was measured as 22.47, 16.93 and 5.63. The same effect was not observed in MnO, CuO, NiO, SnO2, ZnO metal oxides. In order to compare, food industry wastewater treatment sludge which has high carbon content has been selected. After applying of determined optimum operating conditions, the metal content of the treatment sludge was analyzed. Mapping the metal content of the samples studied in optimum conditions was done with using scanning electron microscopy.
It is concluded that, some metals are stabilized with the combined use of microwave preheating and pyrolysis. Additionally, this experimental study is also important to provide new data for the pilot-scale studies.
