Investıgatıon of Applıcabılıty of Electrocoagulatıon Process ın Mineral Processıng
By developing technology and production processes, industrial production occurs more and more waste water every day and threaten public health and wildlife. Especially dewatering technologies that developed in the last century are very important for determining the most appropriate and economical methods. These studies are performed for using a variety of dewatering activities. In this study, by using the method of electrocoagulation on a sample of coal preparation plant waste waters was investigated for treatability and a short processing time with lower costs.
Scope of the project, primarily aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3), Ferrous Sulphate (FeSO4) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) coagulants and aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) electrodes used for some coagulation and electrocoagulation process tests for investigate efficiency removal turbidity in coal preparation plant waste waters. To eliminate these pollutants an Electrocoagulation reactor is used with Fe and Al electrodes which are connected monopolar type. For investigating the performance of removal of turbidity, current density, beginning pH and operating time parameters tested and calculated electrode material costs, process operating parameters, energy consumption and operating costs.
As a result of experiments carried out, by the chemical coagulation tests 94% coagulation efficiency obtained by 0.1 molar, 150 rpm stirring speed, endurance time of 2.5 min, initial pH 9 and the amount of 675 gr/ton iron chloride (FeCl3) charge is the optimum coagulant, however electrocoagulation process tests results showed that with 95% coagulation efficiency obtained by current density of 40 A/m2, 360 rpm stirring rate, 420 sec total process time and initial pH natural pH conditions are optimum application conditions. In terms of cost by using chemical coagulation iron chloride (FeCl3) costs calculated 21,86 TL/ton waste but other hand electrocoagulation process by using aluminum electrodes costs calculated only 17 TL/ton waste. At the same time, in the process if 1,76 kg/ton NaCl used, costs of operations will be decreased 9,56 TL/ton waste.
Test results shows that, the electrocoagulation processing in the turbidity removal performance is more performance and more economical than chemical coagulation.
