Investigation of Relationships of Bio-Indicator Bacteria with Enviromental Parameters in The Coastal Areas of Güllük Bay (Aegean Sea)
Güllük Bay and its living resources have an important place in the Aegean Sea. The coastal areas of the Güllük Bay besides domestic, industrial and agricultural activities have touristical activities intensively on swimming and boat tourisms. Cage farms in Güllük Bay were focused on aquaculture activities more than 15 years around Göl Harbour, Salih Island, Ziraat Island on west of Asin Bay, west coast of Çam Island and west coast of Kazikli Island. After these farms relocated away from coastal areas to the offshore, the juvenile fish production processes started in the soil ponds. Bacteriological effects of this new activity in coastal areas (Asin Bay-Dalyan) are not yet known.
in the previous studies from this thesis about Güllük Bay, probable analyses of fecal sources were shown that the primary source of bacteriological contamination is human. These areas also might contain pathogenic bacteria because of insufficiency of sewage discharge systems in settlements.
to detect bacteriological effects of pollution resources in Güllük Bay, water samples were taken from surface (0-30 cm) in aseptic conditions for bacteriological analyses. Variable environmental parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity were recorded in situ by using Mutiparameter YSI (model 556).
Nutrients (nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and phosphate phosphorus) and chlorophyll-a levels were investigated by using spectrophotometric methods and they were correlated with indicator bacteria level.
in Güllük Bay, it was determined that human acitivities are the most important resource of pollution which carries bacteria and nutrients. Also the continuity of bacteriological pollution inputs were detected. The detected fecal pollution level showed that terrestrial pollution sources carry a potential risk for public and ecosystem health and the sustainable use of living sources. Precautions should be formulated and put into action immediately in order to protect the region from bacteriological risks that may occur due to incoming domestic wastes.
