Biological Hydrogen Production Using Manure at an Anaerobic Reactor

The main aim of this master thesis is to produce hydrogen composition which has a lower impact on the environment and at the same time to optimize anaerobic acidification process with easier degradable wastewater by using different anaerobic processes on cattle manure sludge digesters.

For this purpose, during this work, for biohydrogen production a laboratory-scale anaerobic batch reactor has been used. This anaerobıc reactor that is completely mixed was fed with cattle (cow) manure ; this system has optimized the hydrogen production. The effect of the hydraulic retention time, organic matter loading rate, sludge age, F/M ratio, gas production and composition, pH, temperature, and mixture was observed on the production of biogas. In order to get the higher hydrogen efficiency, some parameters such as pH, temperature, HRT (hydraulic retention time), agitation rate should be operated at their optimum values. The most important parameter that should be controlled in hydrogen production process, is pH. In order to find the optimum pH value, different initial values of pH were tested and the highest yield of hydrogen production was realized at pH value of 6. The obtained results were investigated in terms of the investment and operating costs of conventional reactors with the acidification. Acidogenic reactors can be operated with high-performance and low-cost biological treatment systems. Anaerobic fermentation systems will provide an important contribution to the national economy in this aspect.
