The Effect of Computer-Based Concept Mapping Method on Eight Grade Students' Understanding of Genetic Concepts
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of computer-based concept mapping method, which is based on constructivist learning theory on eight grade students’ understanding of basic genetics concepts regarding unit of “Cell Division and Heredity”. This study was conducted in first semester of 2012-2013 academic year at Fatih district of Istanbul with 41 eight grade students. In this study, which is based on nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental research design, students in the experimental group instructed with computer-based concept mapping method. However, students in the control group received teacher-based traditional instructions. As a data collection tool, before and after the application, students in the each groups was given “Genetic Conceptual Understanding Survey” (Lewis & Wood-Robinson, 2000). In addition, computer-based concept maps were created with experimental group students. The results of the Mann-Whitney U Test revealed no significant difference between the scores of the GCUS for the control and experimental groups in the beginning of the treatment. However, the results of the Wilcoxon Test showed a statically significant difference between the control and experimental groups at the end of the treatment. Moreover, this difference was higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Accordingly, computer-based concept mapping method is effective in increasing students’ conceptual understanding was determined.
