Determination of 210Po Activity in Sediment and Biota Samples of Golden Horn
In the thesis study, activity concentrations of 210Po were determined in the sediment and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) samples of Golden Horn estuary. Sediment and mussel samples were collected from 13 and 8 stations in the Golden Horn, respectively. Sediment samples were separated to <63 µm and >63 µm – 2 mm particle fractions. In addition, soft tissues of mussel samples were used for analysis. 210Po was measured by using an alpha spectrometer after radiochemical separation and deposition of samples. Obtained activity concentrations of 210Po were compared with the levels found in literature.
The effect of physico-chemical parameters (particulate fractions, organic matter % and pH) on the 210Po accumulation in the sediment samples were evaluated by using statistical tests. At the same time, the effects of measured physico-chemical parameters (temperature, salinity, pH value and dissolved oxygen) of collected water samples on the 210Po accumulation in the mussels were examined.
As a results of performed analysis, average activity of 210Po, in the mussel samples 91.98 ± 35.42 Bq kg-1, in the >63 µm sediment samples 55.11 ± 34.05 Bq kg-1 and in the <63 µm sediment samples 97.92 ± 35.16 Bq kg-1 were found. It was realized from this study data, it was determined that Golden Horn have not a risk that threats the biological and ecological balance for examined concentrations of 210Po in the present study.
