Evaluation of the Parks ın the District of Gaziosmanpaşa From The Point of View of Planting Design
Cities include social, cultural and educational spaces, as well as green parts and recreational areas. However, parks are the most important elements of a healthy city.

Nowadays, the rapid and unplanned increase of urbanization causes the natural areas of the city to be constructed and vanished. This whole chain brings an unbalanced ecological system.

Open green spaces in the cities are classified as active and passive areas. Active green areas are the places where citizens intentionally use for recreational purposes. And active green areas consists of children playgrounds, neighborhood parks, district parks, city parks and region parks.
In the first part of this research, urban green areas, the concept of open-space areas, the classification and standards of open-space areas, green parks as open-space areas, classifications of parks and materials that compose parks has been told. Then some additional information about herbal materials, functions of plants and general plantation types has been given.
In the findings, some information about research area has been given and existent open-space areas of research area and open-space areas of zoning plan has been specified. Then total open spaces for each neighborhood and open spaces per person has been calculated.
The subject of this research is consisted of the plantation designs for 96 different parks placed in 16 different neighborhood which are in Gaziosmanpasa district of Istanbul city. Parks has been categorized into three classes by their size. At least three parks has been chosen from each size class and at least one park has been chosen from each neighborhood to maintain a complete representation of whole Gaziosmanpasa district. Parks' existent states, existent plants, and amount of plants has been identified and photos has been taken.
Evaluation of parks by their plantation designs has been made in 3 stages. First, visual characteristics of plants, second, art principles used in planting design, and finally usage potentials of plants has been evaluated.
In the conclusion, a comprehensive synthesis of all samples which has been told in the research, has taken place. All the planting designs applied to the park areas of the district has been investigated and the most commonly used planting design elements has been identified. From those evaluation reports, particular lanting design criteria has been identified which couldn’t be applied in those parks. Some deficiencies that couldn’t be done in the parks in terms of lanting design, has been established. The right and wrong aspects of planting design studies in the parks of Gaziosmanpasa district has been identified. Some sample areas has been chosen and studied in terms of planting design, and then results has been introduced.
Citizens need active and passive green areas to refresh their minds and reduce their stress caused by negative effects of urban life. The parks which are used for the purpose of enjoying, resting and renewing; needs to be designed considering basic principles of ecological balance and plants’ aesthetical and functional properties. But it is seen that in the sample parks which are the research areas of this thesis, planting designs are usually incorrectly and deficiently applicated. And also its established that in some of the parks, has not given place to the plants. In this respect, it can be said that, it is because of lacking of professional knowledge and the wrong planting politics of municipalities.
