A Measurement and Improvement Model for Determining The Factors
Affecting Software Processes and Its Application
Determining the factors that cause deviation from the estimated quality, time, and cost, and taking appropriate actions at an early stage is extremely important for the success of software projects. It is necessary to use statistical methods in order to carry out the quantitative analysis of software processes. The Six Sigma is a systematical approach, which aims continuous improvement of products and processes with the aid of statistical tools.
The aim of this study is to create a model to control the factors affecting the software processes by getting performance indicators of software projects into a measurable form with the application of Six Sigma approach to software processes. While still in the planning phase, through analysing the factors that affect the success of software projects using the model created, predicting the project's success level and describing it in an accepted unit has been targeted.
Throughout the research, the Six Sigma DMAIC approach has been applied to software development processes. The project success indicators have been identified with the literature review. The factors that are considered to have an influence on the project success have been hypothesised, via working with focus groups, doing a literature review and a survey. Afterwards, a weighing work for the determined factors has been carried out by consulting to an expert.
Analyzing 48 software projects from four different institutions, impact levels of the factors that are supposed to affect software processes on the main project success indicators have been inspected. The relation amongst three dependent variables and independent variables was characterized using multiple regression analysis. Using the Six Sigma concept of total process improvement, a model that will describe total project success with dependent variables has been created.
With this model, it will be possible to predict and express success levels of new projects with a common measure at the planning phase of the project. This way, an example and a road map is obtained for the organisations willing to apply the quantitative process enhancement method.
