Business Intelligence Systems and an Application
Decision making in business is one of the issues which management sciences have been dealing with for many years. In the enterprises and small and medium businesses or in the public organizations, in short, in the profit or non-profit organizations, data in that context is becoming prominent as a valuable resource. Data has never lost its importance in terms of capturing the hidden meaning in itself; on the contrary, this importance has risen due to growing severity of competition and growing volume of data. But users have been having two basic problems to access data: complicated technical structure and performance. Business Intelligence systems have arisen as the solution for these problems because of their capabilities. These systems support business users for making accurate, timely and efficient decisions and raising performance by yielding insight from information.
In the introduction chapter of the study, the tendencies in information technology and its usage by business related to data explosion and data management have been reviewed in light of research findings. The fundamental characteristics and comparisons of transactional systems and analysis based systems are also covered.
In the succeeding chapters literature on Transaction Processing Systems, Relational Data Base Management Systems, decision making in business organizations, Decision Support Systems, Executive Information Systems, OLAP and multidimensional analysis techniques has been reviewed.
In the subsequent chapter, the Business Intelligence literature survey, emergence and definitions of the Business Intelligence term and its Turkish meaning have been investigated from different aspects. It has been tried to determine the sine qua non characteristics for the Business Intelligence systems. Then a general introduction to the Agile Software Development Methods has taken place and the fundamental values and principles in "Manifesto for Agile Software Development" and Extreme Programming and Scrum have been reviewed. The literature findings have been summarized in another chapter. While conducting the literature review it has been considered as a principle to reach the original source instead of having been satisfied with indirect references.
Developing process of the Business Intelligence application using Agile Software Development Method based on a public hospital information system is studied in the application chapter. The reasons for selecting the Agile Software Development Method, application model and application steps have been explained. The capabilities of new application in terms of hierarchical analysis, associative analysis and user friendly interface have been evaluated and the application findings have been summarized.
In the context of the findings that have been reached and new tendencies, discussions, comparisons and judgements have been involved in the conclusion chapter.
