Antioxidant Activities of Eremurus spectabilis Bieb. And Some
Sulfurous Compounds Eremurus spectabilis Bieb. is grown in Mediterranean, East and Southeast regions of Turkey, and this plant is commonly used as a vegetable in these regions. In this study, antioxidant activities of Eremurus spectabilis Bieb. and sulfurous compounds were investigated.
In this study, the antioxidant activity of water, ethyl alcohol and ethyl acetate extracts of Eremurus spectabilis Bieb. and sulfurous compounds (glutathione, cysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, homocysteine, 1,4-dithioerythritol, cysteamine, methyl methionine sulfonium chloride, diallyl sulfide, and α-lipoic acid) were investigated by different antioxidant tests including reducing power, cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), hydroxyl radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, DPPH radical scavenging, DMPD radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity, ferric ion reducing antioxidant parameter (FRAP) and metal chelating activities. Results were compared with synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole and Trolox, with natural antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, epicatechin, gallic acid and α-tocopherol. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of all extracts were determined.
It is found out that antioxidant activities of all extracts and sulfurous compounds increase in proportion to the concentration. In general, the highest antioxidant activity was found in ethyl acetate extract while the aqueous extracts were found to be the lowest antioxidant activity. Diallyl sulfide which studied sulfur compounds, was found to be generally the highest antioxidant activity. On the other hand, methyl methionine sulfonium chloride was also found with the lowest antioxidant activity.
It was determined that all extracts of Eremurus spectabilis Bieb. and the sulfurous compounds investigated show antioxidant activity and that could be considered as a source antioxidants.
