Investigation of The Effects of Flame Retardant Additives on PVC

Materials produced from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) occupy an important place in daily life, and their consumption is ever increasing. PVC releases toxic gases into the medium via the dehydrochlorination reaction that takes place during its thermal and/or oxidative degradation. Owing to this fact, PVC polymers that contain flame retardant additives continue to gain importance.

The effects of flame retardant additives on PVC polymers are investigated in this work. The test specimen is chosen to be a family of PVC sewage pipes produced using an industrial-scale extruder. The additives, namely, antimony trioxide, zinc borate and their mixtures at different compositions were physically added to the suspension PVC polymers. In order to determine precisely the effect of additive composition on the specimens, extrusion parameters are held constant.

Upon determining the thermal and mechanical properties of the specimens, oxygen index (OI) test was applied to investigate their resistance to flammability. Thermogravimetric analysis was done in order to determine their resistance to thermal oxidative degradation. Their mechanical properties were investigated by means of the strain tests. The findings were studied in order to reach a conclusion on how the various additives affect the product's thermal stability, resistance to flammability and mechanical properties.

The necessary amount of antimony trioxide additive that improved the PVC formulation was determined as a result of the study. It was observed that the product's resistance to flammability was enhanced with the addition of antimony trioxide and zinc borate. The effect of using different amounts of each additive and their mixtures in different proportions on PVC products' thermal stability, resistance to flammability and mechanical properties were discussed.
