Geotechnical Investigation of The Bursa-Uluabat Power Tunnel

In the range of Emet-Orhaneli Project, over the Orhaneli river of Çınarcık Barrage which has been built the high of +2 m. Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) to 328 m trough down to product the electricity. The water is transported the Uluabat Power Tunnel which is 11.465 km, and forced pipe which is 1150 m. which is moved from barrage to the HEPP. This thesis is included the geological and geotechnical inverstigation of Uluabat Power Plant and the squeezing of conditions.

In the scope of this project, general geological and engineering geological maps were done in the areas and near enviroment the tunnel is to pass through and the surrounding area. It was determined that the tunnel excavated through the Triassic aged Karakaya Formation, the Jura-Cretase aged Akçakoyun Formation and the jura aged Karakoca Formation.

Eight core drills were done on the tunnel area and laboratory experiments were done to identify the necessary physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples obtained from the core drills. On evaluating the laboratory data and RQD, the joint measurements, the rock mass of the area the tunnel will pass through was classified normal conditions according to RMR, Q (Barton).

According to this, it was determined that the rock masses of the tunnel area, for normal conditions according to the RMR and Q classification system, occurred in the very weak-weak (Karakaya Formation) and good and weak (Akçakoyun Formation) groups.

The region of the 513.5 m. to the tunnel is excavated the conventional method, As from the point of exit the tunnel is excavated by TBM which is over 3+100 km. The study is divided by two parts. In the first part, it was determined the tunnel routing of engineering geology and geotechnical properties, if in the second part, it was determined the geotechnical problems of the conventional method and the TBM excavation works to live the geotechnical problems. Evaluation of the rock quality classification systems and laboratory datum results are determined the primary stress, and the definition of the rock squeezing conditions by Jethwa and oth. (1984) and Singh and oth. (1992) to take advantage of the calculations. And then, the deformations of the conventional method is compared the deformation of the TBM methods, which method is most useful were determined.
