Seismic Design of Masonary Infilled Buildings

After the last earthquakes in our country, the miserable situation showed us that our buildings do not meet necessary engineering and design conditions.

It is very important to consider that seismic effects on the project and construction period, because Turkey is on a very important earthquake zone. Since the earthquake effect is the most important loading of the service life of a building, horizontal loading must be modeled with the information of frame behavior.

Masonary wall; while determining the horizontal loading capacity of the structural system between the column and beams, effect of infill wall is not considered. However the infill walls, which are not considered in the construction resolutions, are affecting the system resistance and rigidity in the important partition.

This study includes detailed experimental and analytical studies about the filling walls. Infill wall standards of different countries are defined, and those standards are compared with the Turkish Earthquake Code. Effects of the filling walls to the structural performance of the buildings are given by the numerical analysis.
