The Effect of Copper Addition on Mechanical Properties Of GGG 50 Grade Cast Iron

Spheroidal graphite cast irons have advantages in terms of production and mechanical properties compared to those of other cast iron and steel materials. In addition, the properties can further be improved by austempering heat treatment.


In this thesis, microstructure and mechanical properties of GGG 50 type spheroidal graphite cast iron with additions of 1%, 1.5% and 2% copper have been investigated. Furthermore, samples with and without copper additions have been subjected to austempering and the changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties have been examined.
It was found out that the addition of copper promoted pearlite formation in the matrix. It was noted that mechanical properties of spheroidal graphite cast iron improved with the addition of copper up to 1.5%. In the case of 2% copper addition, the mechanical properties were adversely affected due to the break down of spheroidal graphite nodules. It was further noted that in the austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron samples, the addition of copper does not affect the hardness and the tensile strength.
