| Analysis of Corticomuscular Coherency in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Although, it’s been known that there is a correlation between muscle and brain for a long time, our knowledge about the transmission mechanism of data is still far from to be effectual. Considering neurodegenerative diseases, which have also effects on moving behavior, like Parkinson, Alzheimer, Dystonia, stroke etc. the significance of this knowledge becomes evident. In retrospect, there are some results achieved about diseases falling into this category. Since, these results are nor very common neither robust, they are not used for diagnosis of these diseases. First of all, we investigated the physiologic and anatomic structures of motor system and the basic electrophysiological signals, which can be used to analyze the relationship, produced by these structures. Coherency function, which is the most common technique used for analyzing above mentioned signals, was introduced and findings, obtained in sight of coherency function were summarized. In accordance, weaknesses of coherency function on analyzing these diseases were investigated. After introducing weakness of coherency function, a new method named “bifrequency coherence”, was offered to analyze non-stationary random processes. The new method was examined with synthetic signals and compared with similar methods. Then, real signal were analyzed using this new method. In sight of all these findings, usefulness of the new approach was concluded and some suggestions about future work have been made.
