CHINESE investment in Australia's gold mines is gathering pace, with a unit of Shandong Gold Group poised to take a majority stake in Focus Minerals through a placement worth $227.5 million.

The deal is the latest in a series of moves by major Chinese producers to plug a domestic shortfall and shore up long-term supply for the gold-hungry nation. Last month China National Gold Group Corp., the country's largest gold miner, announced a potential $US3.9 billion ($3.7 billion) bid to acquire African Barrick Gold, while a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group, its second-largest producer, acquired more than 50 per cent of Kalgoorlie's Norton Gold Fields.

Scanners to track nightclub violence in Kings Cross

ID SCANNERS will be installed in every pub, club and strip joint in Kings Cross to rid the area of violent troublemakers.

Thugs will also be banned from the area under tough measures to clean up the strip.

The ID scanners will be linked to ensure that, when a person is thrown out of one premise, they will be unable to enter any other venues.

All patrons entering the venues will be "confirmed and recorded" on the scanners, which will be installed by the middle of next year.

Slowdown talk has boom town's rents, property values declining

Karratha real estate agent Harry Hipworth reckons the death of the resources boom has been greatly exaggerated.

But with house prices falling by 10 per cent and rentals down $400 a week, he admits there has been a sudden slowdown in the growth of the Pilbara town that has been at the epicentre of the boom.

Property prices in Karratha, with is surrounded by massive iron ore mines and liquefied natural gas plants, more than doubled in the past five years.

But with waning consumer confidence, fuelled by talk of the end of the boom, prices have slumped in the past few months.

China's ICBC is scaling back lending to resources to focus on agriculture

One of the world's largest banks, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, is scaling back its lending to the Australian resources sector on fears the mining boom is coming to an end.

The head of the ICBC's local operations, Han Ruixiang, revealed the bank was instead keen to increase its exposure to agriculture.

ICBC has built up a $4 billion lending book in the four years since it opened its first office in Sydney. It has operations in Melbourne and Perth and plans to set up in Brisbane. It has also applied for a banking licence in New Zealand.

PET JERKY DEATH TOLL UPDATE: 360 DOGS, 1 CAT ACCORDING TO FDA

You may recall that at the end of 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned dog owners that they should be aware of a "potential association between development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also described as chicken tenders, strips or treats."

At the time the warning was issued, reports had come in citing that at least 95 dogs had become ill, possibly due to consumption of chicken jerky. However, after multiple tests the FDA was unable to identify any cause for the illnesses, so it is not surprising that (1) people kept feeding their dog's chicken jerky and (2) more dogs got sick.
