Departmental Profile
The statistical sciences are defined to include the traditional concept of statistics (as well as all subdisciplines, such as biostatistics, econometrics, technometrics, etc.) and the newer disciplines such as operations research, management science, decision analysis, and quality management. The Department is located in both the Faculties of Science and Commerce. The statistical sciences are the ultimate service discipline, and the Department believes that the best statistical theory is motivated by data analytic problems in other disciplines. It therefore actively seeks interaction with researchers whose orientation is quantitative.

Avian Demography Unit Research Report 2006
(Including the South African Bird Ringing Unit (SAFRING))
Director: Professor Les Underhill
Unit Profile
The mission of the Avian Demography Unit (ADU) is to contribute to the understanding of bird populations, especially bird population dynamics, and thus make a contribution to the conservation of avian biodiversity. The ADU achieves these goals in two ways. Firstly, through a large complement of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows who undertake research projects at the interface between biology and statistics. Secondly, through a variety of projects in which para-ornithologists throughout southern Africa can participate. These projects range from identifying bird species, through undertaking census surveys, to make detailed observations on breeding productivity. The ADU collates the data, and undertakes curation, data analysis, statistical modelling, publication and dissemination of results. The ADU has a strategic partnership with BirdLife South Africa, which in turn is the local partner for BirdLife International, the largest global bird conservation NGO.
