EU blasts Israel over death penalty for terrorists bill

Hours after bill easing conditions for imposing death penalty on terrorist murderers passes first vote, EU slams 'inhuman' punishment.'

David Rosenberg, 03/01/18 19:09

The European Union slammed Israel Wednesday, hours after a bill aimed at encouraging prosecutors to seek the death penalty for terrorist murderers passed its first hurdle in the Knesset. The Knesset voted 52 to 49 Wednesday in favor of a bill pushed by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party which would ease the conditions under which terrorists convicted of murder could be sentenced to death.

Under the proposal, a terrorist could be sentenced to death with only a simple majority of judges, rather than a unanimous decision, as is currently required. While Israeli law already provides for the death penalty, prosecutors have avoided requesting it be applied. The death penalty has not been used in Israel since 1962.

Hours later, however, the European Union criticized the move and reiterated its opposition to the death penalty. MORE - http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240217

'Kerry wanted to evacuate the Golan Heights'

MK Motti Yogev to Arutz Sheva: We are in an amazing and wonderful time period. We are finished with the eight years of Obama's freeze.

Eliran Aharon, 04/01/18 00:02

MK Motti Yogev (Jewish Home) on Wednesday spoke with Arutz Sheva on the issue of construction in Judea and Samaria, the debate over the Supermarket Law and MK Yair Lapid's threats to turn to the Supreme Court to thwart Knesset legislation.

"Those who travel in Judea and Samaria see that there is construction, maybe not enough construction, but we are building and will continue to build," Yogev said, adding, "We are releasing construction plans and we will release more construction plans.”

"We concluded eight years of Obama's construction freeze, which were eight difficult years. The prime minister was required to withstand very difficult pressures, some of which I just recently found out about, such as when John Kerry sought to evacuate the entire Golan Heights and turn it into a Syrian-controlled nature reserve. There was also pressure on Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. Now the pressure is slowly being alleviated,” he continued.

Yogev made clear, however, that the current pace of construction in Judea and Samaria is insufficient. "I am not satisfied with what we are building, definitely not. We are constantly calling for the planning of more construction and the approval of additional building plans," he said, adding that by the end of January, both the government and the Planning and Building Committee will approve another 3,000 housing units.

"The people of Israel are growing stronger in their country. The decision of the Likud Central Committee, which is ‘narrowing the gaps’ from the Jewish Home, is welcomed as well, and I hope that with the help of God, together with the additional construction, we will eventually reach full sovereignty between the sea and the Jordan," said Yogev.

He stressed that there is no construction freeze in Judea and Samaria, but noted that there is still much to be done. "We only have eight Knesset seats in the Jewish Home, and when we grow and win more, I hope and assume that our influence will be greater and we will succeed in influencing larger construction. At the end of the day, it’s what the people of Israel decide.”

Regarding the Supermarket Bill, Yogev predicted that the bill would be approved. A vote on the bill was postponed earlier this week when no majority for it could be found.

"This law is solely about maintaining the status quo on keeping the Sabbath. It is important that we insist that there be no desecration of Shabbat through commerce. We permitted restaurants and coffee shops [to open on Shabbat], but certainly not for full-fledged shopping for clothes and anything else on Shabbat,” he said.

Yair Lapid is threatening to appeal to the Supreme Court if the law is approved, what do you think?
"Lapid is trying to bypass Israeli democracy. Israeli democracy is the representation in the Knesset which makes the decisions. His going to the Supreme Court is in essence bypassing democracy. I am fond of Yair Lapid, but his party is also not democratic. He is the one who determines its members, while we are a party of primaries and elections."

As for the possibility that the Supreme Court would accept a petition and nullify a law, Yogev said, "Ultimately, the Knesset will have to understand that in this tension between the judiciary authority and the legislative branch, which is the representative of the people, we need to give preference to the legislative branch and accept the bill that we legislated. In all democratic countries there is no such thing that the Supreme Court annuls the legislative act of the legislator.” http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240228

Israelis overwhelmingly oppose partition of Jerusalem

Just 12% of Israeli Jews back partition of Jerusalem in exchange for peace deal with PA. 64% say UN resolutions on Jerusalem meaningless.

David Rosenberg, 03/01/18 21:04

A solid majority of Israeli Jews opposed Palestinian Authority demands that Israel’s capital city, Jerusalem, be partitioned as part of a future final status agreement.

According to a poll released Wednesday by the Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University, a paltry 12.3% of Israeli Jews say they would accept the partition of Jerusalem, following after a stable peace with the Palestinian Authority was achieved.

The overwhelming majority (71.7%) responded that the city should remained unified, and stay the capital of Israel – and not be shared as a dual capital with a future Palestinian state.

Of those, 19.9% said Islamic holy places could be excluded from Israeli control.

Another 6.8% said they would accept Jerusalem becoming a ‘corpus separatum’ – a sort of international city administered by the United Nations, as proposed by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194 in 1948.

Even fewer endorsed the idea of Jerusalem becoming a dual capital for both Israel and a future Palestinian state, while remaining under full Israeli sovereignty, with just 5.5% of Israeli Jews backing such an arrangement.

But Israeli Arabs overwhelming support fundamentally altering the status quo of Israel’s capital, with 43.5% backing partition of Jerusalem, while 21.9% say the city should remain united, but as the joint capital of both Israel and a Palestinian state. Ten point six percent said they backed Jerusalem becoming an international city.

While Israeli Jews strongly backed maintaining the status quo of Israeli sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, they were less likely believe that would likely continue if Israel reached a comprehensive peace deal with the PA.

Half of Israeli Jews believe the city would remain the unified capital city of Israel even under a peace deal with the PA, including 22.9% who say Islamic holy places would be excluded from Israeli control.

Nearly a quarter (22.9%) say the city would be partitioned, with an additional 6.3% believing the city would likely remain united, but as a joint capital. Five percent say Jerusalem would likely become an international city.

Despite their support for retaining Jerusalem as a unified city, close to two-thirds (61.2%) of Israeli Jews believe the city is already de facto divided between predominantly Jewish neighborhoods, and majority Arab neighborhoods. Just over a third (35.2%) say the city is not de facto divided. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240223
Nikki Haley hosts reception for UN Israel supporters

US Ambassador hosts 64 countries that did not support resolution against J'lem recognition. 'US will remember the day it was singled out.'

Mordechai Sones, 04/01/18 13:43

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley hosted a "Friends of the US" reception last night, inviting those who voted against, abstained, or did not participate in a resolution condemning the United States for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reports CNN.

"It’s easy for friends to be with you in the good times, but it’s the friends who are with you during the challenging times that will never be forgotten. Thank you to the 64," Haley tweeted.

During an emergency session of the General Assembly, the body voted 128 to 9 to adopt draft resolution A/ES-10/L22, rejecting President Trump’s declaration recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city and chiding Israel over illegal “actions in Occupied East Jerusalem”. An additional 35 nations abstained from the vote, while another 21 did not participate.

Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon praised Haley and the United States' courage. MORE - http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240253
Western feminists ignore Iran and boycott Israel

Iranian young women ar ignored by their Western sisters in their struggle against the dictatorship.

Giulio Meotti, 04/01/18 06:41

The most deafening silence is that of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid al-Hussein, the Jordanian prince always ready to condemn Israel and the United States, but who has never spent a single word on  the victims of Iran's repression.

Then rhere is the silence of the Human Rights Council's committees. Not a single urgent declaration by these “experts” on arbitrary detention, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and torture?

But the silence which is more surprising is that of the feminists.

The Iranian girl waving her white hijab to say no to the Islamic Republic of the ayatollahs has become the iconic picture of the protests. Many young women in Iran are imitating her gesture to say "no" to any form of oppression. Insights into People in the Torah Series
The Torah Portion of Shmot; Exodus 1:1–6:1

Moshe Kempinski

After the great deliverance that Joseph wrought to the people and land of Egypt we begin to see a set of events that will regrettably become the typology of Jewish existence throughout history.

"A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know about Joseph. He said to his people, "Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we are. Get ready, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they increase, and a war befall us, and they join our enemies and wage war against us and depart from the land."So they appointed over them tax collectors to afflict them with their burdens, and they built store cities for Pharaoh, namely Pithom and Raamses" (Exodus 1:8-11)
This process of oppression takes a fatal turn as the Pharaoh decrees death for all newborn male infant’s. At first he attempts to elicit the aid of two of the chief midwives of the Israelites, Shifra and Puah. He commands them to do the following:
When you deliver the Hebrew women, and you see on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall put him to death, but if it is a daughter, she may live." (ibid:16)

The two, courageous and faithful women do the opposite and ensure the survival of these children. “The midwives, however, feared God; so they did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, but they enabled the boys to live…”(ibid :17)

As a result the Pharaoh is pushed deeper into his hate filled pursuit and thereby decrees:

"And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you shall cast into the Nile, and every daughter you shall allow to live." (ibid:22)

The Torah text then immediately tells us the following:

A man of the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. (ibid 2:1)

What occurred between these two events?

Who are the “man of the house of Levi and the daughter of Levi”?

We subsequently learn that Amram is that man. Amram was the "chief of his generation" (Soṭah. 12a). Amram was the son of Kohath, and grandson of Levi. When the time came to bury Jacob in the tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, Amram was part of the entourage and the time spent in Hebron impacted him dramatically. His name Amram describes his calling; Amram- a nation (Am) that is to strive to be elevated (Ram).

When Pharaoh declares his fears “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous (Rav) and stronger than we are”, it is Amram that instructs his people that the issue of their survival is not about being many (Rav) but rather about being elevated(Ram). Furthermore when the Torah text describes how the Pharaoh attempted to embitter (Mar) their lives, it was Amram that reminded his people that the focus should not be about the bitter (Mar) but rather on the power to be elevated (Ram) in all situations.

Amram then marries his aunt, Yocheved ,“A man of the house of Levy marries the daughter of Levi.”

We soon discover that Amram and Yocheved already have two children, Miriam and Aaron. When the wicked decree of Pharaoh was revealed, Amram and Yocheved decided that they needed to separate from each other. They were concerned about the potential of birthing a child into what was clearly mortal danger. The rest of the people of Israel follow suit after their leaders

It was their young daughter Miriam who declared to them according to the midrash, “your decree is more severe than Pharaoh’s. Pharaoh decreed only against the males; you have decreed against the males and females. ". It is then that the couple courageously and faithfully decide to remarry and subsequently give birth to their third child.

Yocheved whose name means "Honor to G-d" understands that she needs to overcome her maternal instincts of fear for the child and strive forward. She deeply understood the spiritual significance of having more children and of faith in the future.

The Midrash states that the two Midwives who Pharaoh enlisted to murder the male children, Shifra and Puah ,were none other than Yocheved and her daughter Miriam. They deeply understood the spiritual importance of bringing children into the world. They also intuitively accepted the need to even risk their lives to make that happen. "The midwives, however, feared God; so they did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, but they enabled the boys to live...(ibid :17)

After giving birth to Moshe (Moses) prematurely, Yocheved attempts to hide the new infant, but begins to realize that the baby will easily be discovered. The midrash explains that it had become common knowledge that the astrologers of Egypt had warned Pharaoh that the redeemer of the Jewish people was about to be born. As a result Pharaoh then decreed that all male children would be put into the Nile to drown. Amram and Yocheved put Moshe into the Nile and the astrologers then informed Pharaoh that the Redeemer had been born and that he had been “put” into the Nile. (Ber.Rab. 1:21).

The decree was rescinded.

One needs to explore the spiritual courage that made up Amram and Yocheved . They deeply understood the spiritual implications of the birth of every child. They deeply understood the importance of “elevating” one’s purpose in this world to the Higher calling. They also needed to draw from within themselves the courage and faith in their future and their destiny.

It is that spiritual strength and awareness that was passed on to their son. Yocheved continues to raise Moshe in the courts of Egypt and Amram could not have been that far away. Moshe was clearly given the awareness of his roots and his people and as a result never strayed too far from his brothers.

"Now it came to pass in those days that Moses grew up and went out to his brothers and looked at their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man of his brothers."

It was those two elements that were transferred to Moshe and subsequently to all his people. The importance of elevating one’s purpose and of never losing faith in one’s future and destiny.

In spite of some of the darkest hours experienced by the people of Israel in the coldest corners of exile or in the midst of the death camps of Europe, those two elements were never forgotten.

As the “dry Bones” straggled out of the ovens of Auschwitz they were filled with flesh ,sinew and spirit and they started anew. They raised themselves and started new families and had more children. They stubbornly believed in their destiny and their future.

That is the essence of greatness.

Moshe Kempinski

The Land of Israel and its interconnected history with the people of Israel seems to be continuously intertwined with its produce and fruits. In the book of Deuteronomy we read that the land of Israel is described as "A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey (Deut. 8:8).

When Jacob determines to send a gift of appeasement to the mysterious viceroy in Egypt he sends fruits and nuts grown on the trees of the land of Israel.

When the spies return from their sojourn in the land they return with fruits.
The blossoming of the land is intertwined with the Promise of the land

Yet when the people of Israel are sent out of the land we read the opposite.

When HaShem exiles His people from the land of Israel he declares that the land will feel it and show it. The land would become desolate without its people. So desolate that any nation that would try to inhabit it would become desolate as well ( Leviticus 26:32-35).

As a result, the blossoming of the land actually becomes the first and ultimate sign of redemption in the final days:

But you O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, are coming home.” (Ezekiel 36:8).

Every fruit and every flower a declaration and a fulfilment of prophecy.

The Israel Trees Zo Artzeinu movement, has created a project that allows every individual to be a part of this declaration and this fulfillment. They will plant your trees for you in the Holy Land and you can choose between a wide variety of fruit trees.

They have created a project wherein every individual whose soul is stirred, is given the opportunity to be part of a divine moment in history.

2) Yaffi fought for Yehuda like a lion'

Yaffa Glick Z'L with her husband ( yibadeh leChaim) Yehuda

Memoriam for Yaffa Glick Z"L

Benny Tocker,

MK Yehuda Glick's nephew speaks about his aunt following her passing. 'She was a beacon of kindness and giving. We hoped for a miracle.'

Shai Glick, the nephew of MK Yehuda Glick and head of the Jewish rights organization B’Tsalmo, spoke to Arutz Sheva about the MK’s wife, Yaffi, who passed away yesterday morning after suffering a severe stroke.

“Yaffa was a woman who was radiant to everyone. Their home was always open. She was the light of the house, and was also responsible for many people in the Har Hevron region. Her name preceded her.”

“She was someone who went through a lot in her life,” Glick said. “Her first husband passed away from a serious illness, and she was beside him until his death. Later, she went through what happened with Yehuda when they tried to assassinate him.

“They have many children and grandchildren, including two adopted children, and even before that they served for about a decade as a foster family for the six children of the Ames family, whose parents were murdered in a terror attack in the Har Hevron region. The children were left without parents, and they took them in and adopted them. They were a beacon of giving. Everyone who met them was amazed at how much light they had.”

Glick told of Yaffi’s support for Yehuda throughout all of his toughest moments. “Yaffi stood beside Yehuda throughout the course of his public career, even in the toughest moments. Yehuda went through hard times in his life even before the assassination attempt. For years, they said he was crazy and called him the most dangerous man in the Middle East, falsely accused him of hitting an elderly woman, and wanted to put him in jail. The whole time, she stood beside him. She encouraged him even if she did not always agree with what he did, but she believed in his powers. When they tried to assassinate him and he was on the verge of death, she fought like a lion, standing by him and believing in him, while supporting an entire family in that most difficult period. When people came to visit Yehuda at the hospital, she received each and every one with such light that people couldn’t understand how she could have such inner strength and light. It was amazing.”

“Suddenly what happened happened, and we stood by Yaffi and prayed powerful prayers, hoping for a miracle. We would visit her, pray with her, sing with her - and then came the terrible news.

“This is a personal and familial tragedy, and we are truly sad today. Yaffi wrote a book of poems, and also took beautiful photographs that were published. She had the sensitive soul of an artist. We will remember only good things about her.”
