A new low in US-PA ties? PA recalls ambassador to US

PA foreign affairs chief orders top diplomat in US Husam Zomlot, back to Ramallah for 'consultations' following Jerusalem recognition.

David Rosenberg, 31/12/17 19:26 | updated: 19:39

The Palestinian Authority has recalled its top diplomat to the United States, amid a series of diplomatic rows between the PA and the Trump administration.

On Sunday, PA foreign affairs chief Riyad al-Maliki ordered the PLO’s Washington envoy Husam Zomlot back to Ramallah, the Wafa news agency reported. [Now what The Donald needs to do is issue a travel ban on all from the so called “PA” territory and prevent any of them from coming to the US because they are terrorists. – rdb]

Relations between the PA and the US have been icy since President Donald Trump’s historic recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 6th.

Following President Trump’s declaration that the US recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and announced plans to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, senior PA officials warned that Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, would not be welcome in the PA during his visit to the Middle East, originally scheduled for December 18th.

Pence had been scheduled to meet with PA chief Mahmoud Abbas – a meeting the 82-year-old PA leader cancelled following Trump’s Jerusalem announcement.

In November, the Trump administration warned that if the PA would not agree to new negotiations with Israel, the US would shutter the PLO office in Washington DC.

PA officials responded angrily, threatening to cut off all ties with Washington if the PLO office was closed.

Following President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem, the PA pressed the United Nations to denounce move, backing a draft resolution introduced to the UN Security Council by the Egyptian delegation.

On December 18th, the US vetoed the Egyptian resolution, which won the backing of the remaining 14 members of the council. Three days later, however, a similar draft resolution, introduced by Turkey and Yemen, passed the UN General Assembly 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions. Twenty-one other member states declined to vote. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240069 [The State Department and The Donald needs to formally and officially declare that the “PA” is not a valid entity in the ME and is not a state but is an extension of Jordan occupying Israeli territory. – rdb]
Watch: Likud unanimously backs sovereignty over Judea, Samaria

Members of Likud's central committee vote on proposal to extend Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.

Yoni Kempinski, 31/12/17 20:33 | updated: 20:49

Some 1,500 members of the Likud Central Committee voted unanimously Sunday night in favor of a proposal to extend Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.

At a special party meeting at the Avenue Conference Center near Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel, roughly half of the party’s 3,000 central committee members gathered to debate the first major change to the Likud platform since 2005 which was pushed by popular demand, rather than the party chairman.

The meeting was called after 900 members of the central committee signed a petition calling for a debate and vote on the proposal.

While symbolically important, the change to the party’s platform does not directly affect the policies of the ruling Likud faction.

In 2005, central committee members succeeded in pushing a vote against then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s planned disengagement from Gaza and parts of northern Samaria. Despite the vote, however, in August of that year, the Sharon government carried out the planned withdrawals, dismantling a total of 25 Israeli towns.

Sunday’s resolution “calls on Likud’s elected leaders to work to allow unrestricted construction [in Judea and Samaria], and to extend Israeli law and sovereignty in all the areas of liberated settlement in Judea and Samaria.”

While some top Likud officials, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, did not attend the event, supporters of the move addressed the gathering, including Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Labor and Welfare Minister Haim Katz, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, Science Minister Ofir Akunis, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, and MK Sharren Haskel.

Fifty years ago we liberated our ancestral homeland, Judea and Samaria, greater Jerusalem, the Tomb of the Patriarchs [in Hevron], Rachel’s Tomb [in Bethlehem], and the Western Wall,” said Minister Haim Katz ahead of the vote. “But today, unfortunately, after 50 years, when half a million Israeli citizens… are discriminated against when it comes to construction and security.”

“The time has come to end the [requirement] that the army approve the [construction] of every kindergarten, road, or even repair work for [public] lighting.” http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240071

PA woman filmed attacking soldiers indicted

21-year-old Arab woman charged with assault for slapping, kicking IDF soldiers. Incident, which was filmed, later went viral on the net.

David Rosenberg, 31/12/17 20:02

An Arab woman arrested recently after footage of her and a relative slapping, kicking, and harassing IDF soldiers went viral has been indicted on assault charges.

Earlier this month, Nour Tamimi and her cousin, Ahed Tamimi, were filmed harassing IDF soldiers stationed in the village of Nabi Salih, near the Palestinian Authority-controlled city of Ramallah.

The soldiers had been deployed to Nabi Salih to contain violent riots in the area.

Footage of the incident December 15th incident, which quickly went viral, provoked an angry backlash among many Israeli social media users. Right-wing activists claimed the incident highlighted the plight of many IDF soldiers, who are constrained by restrictive use-of-force regulations and are often confronted by far-left or Arab activists seeking to provoke the soldiers and film their reactions.

Some commentators noted that the Tamimi family has a long history of such actions against Israeli security forces.

"We value the restraint of the soldiers, but this, too, has a limit," said an IDF Brigadier General (Res.) "It's good to remain calm, cool, and collected - but there's also a need to identify the point at which things have gone too far. Pepper spray the attacker’s face, force him to the ground, cuff him and arrest him."

Ahed Tamimi claimed that she assaulted the soldier because he had shot her cousin with a rubber bullet. "I saw the same soldiers who hit my cousin, this time in front of my house. I could not keep quiet and I responded as I did," Tamimi told the court.

On December 19th, the IDF arrested 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi during a raid of her family’s house in Nabi Salih.

Israeli authorities later arrested Nour Tamimi, 21, and Ahed’s mother, Nariman Tamimi.

On Sunday, the Ofer Military Court northwest of Jerusalem handed down an indictment against Nour Tamimi, charging her with aggravated assault and interfering with an IDF operation.

Last week, prosecutors said they intended to charge all three of the Tamimis with assault charges, along with other charges including incitement to violence. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240070 [This vile little tramp needs to locked up and the key thrown away along with the majority of her family. Costa Rica working to uncover cause of plane crash

Costa Rican investigators work to uncover what caused charter flight to crash minutes after takeoff.

Arutz Sheva Staff, 01/01/18 14:43

Costa Rica investigators are working to uncover what caused a Nature Air charter flight to crash in a wooded area 140 miles west of San Jose. The crash occurred when the plane, carrying 10 American tourists and two local crew members, crashed and burst into flames in a wooded area in Guanacaste, northwest Costa Rica.

Speaking at a news conference Costa Rica Civilian Aviation Director Enio Cubillo said the plane, he is a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and had passed a safety inspection approximately one month ago.

According to a statement from Nature Air, the plane was one of two charter planes carrying a total of twenty passengers. The first plane, which left 20 minutes before the doomed flight, arrived in San Jose at 11:40a.m.

Commenting on the "regrettable" crash, Nature Air noted that "this plane crashed a few minutes after takeoff."

Meanwhile, officials are still working to confirm the identities of US citizens who were aboard the plane at the time of the crash. Though Nature Air provided a list of passengers, not all the names on it have been confirmed.

Cuba has identified the pilot as Juan Manuel Retana, an experienced pilot and a cousin of former Costa Rican President Laura Chincilla.

Costa Rica Security Minister Gustavo Mata said autopsies may be needed to determine identities, and emphasized that "there are no people alive."

A Jewish family of five is among the dead, and five other Americans have yet to be identified. The family, Bruce and Irene Steinberg and their three sons Matthew, William, and Zachary, were part of Scarsdale, New York's Jewish community. Nature Air has not yet commented on the incident. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/240096

2Samuel 16:5And King David came to Bahurim. And, behold, a man was coming out from there, of the family of the house of Saul; and his name was Shimei, the son of Gera. He came out, and he came cursing. 6And he stoned David with stones and all the servants of King David, and all the people, and all the mighty men on his right and on his left. 7And Shimei said this in his cursing, Go out! Go out, O man of blood, O worthless man! 8Jehovah has turned back on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. And Jehovah shall give the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. And, behold, you are taken in your mischief, for you are a man of blood.
Iranians target Tehran’s support for Palestinians amid massive protests

Some demonstrators chant 'Not Gaza, Not Lebanon, I give my life for Iran,' accusing regime of ignoring domestic issues while backing foreigners

By Joshua Davidovich Today, 3:14 am

Protests rocking Iran that began as an outcry over economic issues have metastasized into demonstrations against a host of issues, including the regime’s support for Palestinian causes while ignoring problems at home. The protests began in the second city of Mashhad on Thursday as an attack on high living costs but quickly turned against the Islamic regime as a whole.

There have been reports of chants in favor of the monarchy toppled by the Islamic revolution of 1979, while others have criticized the regime for supporting the Palestinians and other regional movements rather than focusing on problems at home. The slogan “Not Gaza, Not Lebanon, I Give My Life for Iran” has been repeated in protests across the country, which stretched into a third day Saturday.

In the northeastern city of Sabzevar, a protest was disrupted when a small group of demonstrators began chanting “forget Palestine,” The New York Times reported, quoting hard-line cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Alamolhoda, who called the chants “norm-braking.”

Israeli leaders have seemingly attempted to glom onto the idea, focusing on Iranian support for the Palestinian Hamas terror group as tensions with Gaza intensified over the weekend.

On Saturday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said mortar shells fired at Israel a day earlier had been supplied by Iran.

Hours later, the Israeli army accused Iran of attempting to spark a war between Israel and Gaza terror groups and putting the lives of Palestinians in danger, following a retaliatory raid.

Iran has boasted of its support for the Palestinians, particularly Hamas. In August, Hamas in Gaza leader said Iran had become “the largest backer financially and militarily” of the terror group’s armed wing.

He added that with Iran’s help, Hamas is accumulating military power in preparation for a battle for “the liberation of Palestine,” referring to missile technology as well as other arms.

Iran also openly supports armed movements in Syria and Iraq and is accused of backing the Houthi rebels in Yemen, including supplying them with missiles and other arms.

At the same time, the regime has continued to use opposition to Israel, the US and Saudi Arabia as a cudgel in deflecting attention from the protests, which Tehran has described as a domestic matter. Signs reading “Down with Israel” featured prominently at a pro-regime rally in Tehran Saturday and many there spoke out against the US.

Mohsen Araki, a Shiite cleric who serves in Iran’s Assembly of Experts, praised Rouhani’s efforts at improving the economy. However, he said Rouhani needed to do more to challenge “enemy pressures.” “We must go back to the pre-nuclear deal situation,” Araki said. “The enemy has not kept with its commitments.”

Ali Ahmadi, a pro-government demonstrator, blamed the US for all of Iran’s economic problems. “They always say that we are supporting Iranian people, but who should pay the costs?” Ahmadi asked. https://www.timesofisrael.com/iranians-target-tehrans-support-for-palestinians-amid-massive-protests/

Iran blocks internet, may shut down Telegram app as protests spread

Anti-regime demonstrators attack town hall in Tehran, burn Iranian flag; 3 said shot dead in central Iran by Revolutionary Guards

By AFP and TOI staff 30 December 2017, 11:22

Demonstrators attacked a town hall in the Iranian capital Saturday as protests spilled into a third night despite government warnings against any further “illegal gatherings” and moves to cut off the internet on mobile phones.

Unverified videos on social media appeared to show thousands marching through the western cities of Khorramabad, Zanjan and Ahvaz, while reports spread rapidly that several people had been shot dead by police in the town of Dorud. According to Al-Arabiya, three Iranian protesters were killed by the Revolutionary Guards in the central Iran town.

A swirl of rumors, combined with travel restrictions and a near-total media blackout from official agencies, made it difficult to confirm the reports.

The authorities appeared to respond by cutting internet access to mobile phones, with the main networks interrupted at least in Tehran shortly before midnight, AFP reporters said.

Several Iranian news agencies warned Telegram, the most popular social media service in the country, might soon be shut down after communications minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi accused one popular channel, Amadnews, of encouraging an “armed uprising.”

Meanwhile, the conservative Mehr news agency posted videos of protesters attacking a town hall in central Tehran, overturning a police car and burning the Iranian flag.

Iranian social media accounts posted videos of demonstrators tearing down regime billboards featuring Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s photo.

There was chaos earlier around the capital’s university as hundreds took to the streets, blocking traffic and shouting slogans against the regime. The semi-official Fars news agency said 70 students protested at Tehran University, throwing rocks at police. They reportedly chanted “Death to the dictator,” in reference to Khamenei.

Reuters reported that footage on social media showed riot police clubbing and arresting the demonstrators, and said protesters were also arrested elsewhere in Tehran.

But the authorities could also count on a show of strength, with hundreds of counter-demonstrators seizing control of the university entrance, chanting “Death to the seditionists.”

Annual rallies marking the defeat of the last major protest movement in 2009 had already been scheduled for Saturday morning and brought thousands of regime supporters to the streets across the country.

Sunni jihadists claim they blew up Iran oil pipeline

Online video says 'operation was conducted to inflict losses on the economy of criminal Iranian regime'

By AP 30 December 2017, 9:50 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A Sunni jihadist group on Saturday claimed to have blown up an oil pipeline in Iran’s southern Khuzestan province, the scene of other attacks by Arab separatists. Iranian authorities have not acknowledged any such attack.

An online video posted by Ansar al-Furqan claimed the attack and showed what it described as a pipeline near Omidiyeh.

The US-based SITE Intelligence Group quoted the video on Saturday as saying: “This operation was conducted to inflict losses on the economy of criminal Iranian regime.”

SITE said the attack by Ansar al-Furqan, if confirmed, would be their first in oil-rich southern Iran.

Iran has faced low-level separatist unrest from Kurds in its northwest, the Baluch in its east and Arabs in its south since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. https://www.timesofisrael.com/sunni-jihadists-claim-they-blew-up-iran-oil-pipeline/
Backing Iran protests, Trump says ‘oppressive regimes cannot last forever’

US president tweets his September speech on Islamic Republic as anti-regime demonstrations, hardliner counterprotests sweep country

By Agencies and TOI staff 30 December 2017, 10:16 pm

US President Donald Trump weighed in on protests in Iran Saturday, warning that the country’s people want change and “oppressive regimes cannot endure forever.”

Trump posted on Twitter a clip of his speech to the UN General Assembly in September in which he took aim at the Iranian regime, which Washington has held out as its top adversary in the Middle East.

“Oppressive regimes cannot endure forever, and the day will come when the Iranian people will face a choice,” he tweeted, quoting from the speech.

“The world is watching!”

The US president had addressed the protests on Friday, tweeting: “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption & its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad.”

“Iranian govt should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching! #IranProtests.”

A state television report on Saturday quoted Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, as saying that “Iranian people give no credit to the deceitful and opportunist remarks of US officials or Mr. Trump.”

Iranian state-controlled media on Saturday characterized the worst anti-regime protests in eight years as masterminded by American, British, and Israeli spies seeking “to stir unrest” in the Islamic Republic.

The regime on Saturday warned protesters against holding fresh demonstrations, and organized rallies by hardline supporters, after protests spread Thursday and Friday into several cities including Tehran. Fifty-two people were arrested in Iran’s second most populous city of Mashhad on Thursday. State news channel IRINN said it had been banned from covering the protests.

Three Iranian protesters were shot dead by the Revolutionary Guards at a Saturday night demonstration in central Iran, the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya network reported, citing local reports. There was no immediate confirmation of the incident, which reportedly took place in Doroud, in the Loerstan province.

PM: Trump may defy world consensus on Iran as he did on Jerusalem

Netanyahu says he wouldn't 'discount' president when he pledges to act against Iran: 'I think he means it'

By TOI staff 30 December 2017, 7:34 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview that he believes US President Donald Trump is “willing to go against the current” in his policy towards Iran, just as he did in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital earlier this month.

In an interview broadcast Friday with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee on the Christian Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), Netanyahu said he never gave up on the possibility that Trump would make his December 6 declaration, directing the relocation of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“It’s a fact that Donald Trump did what other presidents promised to do but didn’t do… and I think that this is an indication that he is willing to go against the current. And I wouldn’t discount the president when he says things like that, not only on Jerusalem but also on Iran,” Netanyahu argued.

The one minute clip that aired Friday was a preview of the full interview that the international Christian-based broadcast television network will run on Saturday evening and Sunday evening.

Last month, Trump decided not to recertify the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, saying the agreement had failed to curb Iran’s missile program or hinder its destabilizing activities in the Middle East.

Praising the US president’s November decision, Netanyahu told TBN: “He pulled away from this horrible deal that will guarantee that Iran will have 100 nuclear bombs in a decade or so or the ability to make them unless this deal is stopped, and he said, ‘Okay, you either fix the deal, or you know, I nix it.'”

“And people say, ‘Well does he mean it?,’ and it’s like the Jerusalem thing, I think he means it!” the prime minister concluded.

In a December 6 address from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government as merely based on reality. Trump stressed that he was not prejudging the final status of the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites. https://www.timesofisrael.com/pm-trump-may-defy-world-consensus-on-iran-as-he-did-on-jerusalem/

Israeli jets strike Hamas post in Gaza in response to shelling

IDF accuses Iran of pushing Israel and terror groups to war, 'playing with the lives of Gaza residents,' by supplying mortar shells to Gaza terror groups

By TOI staff 30 December 2017, 11:57

Israeli jets on Saturday night carried out a second round of airstrikes in southern Gaza in retaliation for three mortar shells fired at Israel on Friday. The Israeli Air Force struck a Hamas post in the coastal enclave, according to a statement from the IDF just before midnight.

Following the retaliatory raid, the army accused Iran of attempting to spark a war between Israel and Gaza terror groups and putting the lives of Palestinians in danger.

“The serious fire on Friday proved again that Iran, through rogue and extremist terrorist groups, is working to deteriorate the regional situation, is playing with the lives of Gaza residents, and may lead the Strip to an escalation [of hostilities] after years of quiet,” the IDF said.

Earlier on Saturday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the three mortar shells were supplied by Iran to terrorist groups in Gaza. He described the fire on Friday as a “grave act.”

Speaking to Hadashot News’ “Meet the Press,” Liberman said the Islamic Republic has supplied such weaponry to a number of terror groups in the Gaza Strip in the past, and therefore it was “too early” to identify the exact source of the shelling.

Friday’s shelling had targeted the Sha’ar Hanegev and Sdot Hanegev regions of southern Israel on Friday afternoon. Two of the mortar shells were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, while the third struck near a building in a community in the area, causing damage.

According to initial Israeli assessments, the barrage was not launched by the Hamas terror group, which controls the Gaza Strip, but by other terrorist organizations in the enclave. Israel holds Hamas responsible for all fire emanating from the Gaza Strip.

The launches appeared to deliberately coincide with a ceremony marking what would have been the 24th birthday of Oron Shaul, an IDF soldier who was killed in 2014, and whose remains are held by Hamas.

On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces had retaliated by attacking two Hamas positions with tank shelling and strikes from aircraft.

The IDF on Friday had originally attributed the fire to rockets, rather than mortar shells.

The mortar attack was the first such incident since December 18.

This month saw two weeks of near-daily rocket launches, the largest incidence of missile-fire from the Strip since the 2014 Israel-Hamas war. These daily attacks had recently seemed to have come to an end.

Protesting US President Donald Trump’s December 6 declaration that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital, Hamas, which seeks Israel’s destruction, has called for a new intifada and vowed to liberate Jerusalem https://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-jets-strike-hamas-post-in-gaza-in-response-to-shelling/

Likud’s top body set to urge annexing parts of West Bank

Netanyahu, long an opponent of similar declarations by the party, 'didn't try to delay or cancel the meeting,' say activists

By TOI staff Today, 9:25 am

Top activists in the ruling Likud party are set to convene Sunday for a vote on a resolution urging the party’s leaders to formally annex to Israel parts of the West Bank, and to allow unlimited construction in settlements. Any such vote by Likud’s 3,000-member Central Committee would not be binding on cabinet ministers, but carries political force inside the party.
