The above paper is a useful contribution. I recommend that the paper to be accepted for publication as a short communication provided the author(s) comply with the points listed below and agree to modify the manuscript accordingly:

  1. Section 1. Introduction should be made very short and refs 2, 12 and 13 can be removed.

  2. Section 2. Basic equations should be removed.

  3. Sections 3. & 4. are to be made as one section to shorten the manuscript.

  4. Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) should be removed.

  5. Table 1 and Table 2 should be removed while the author(s) can mentioned that “Results are compared for constant property, M = m = 0 and Pr = 0.71 with Kelson and Desseaux [10] and comparison table is not presented here for the sake of brevity”, which should be included in the first paragraph of the Section “ 4. Results and discussion”

  6. Results and discussion section is needed to make short. Figures.4 and 5 should be restricted with only two parts (a)-(b) instead of four parts (a)-(d) by combining the curves.

  7. Standard notations Pr, Nu and Cp can be used instead of Pr , Nu and cp .

  8. Reference numbers should appear in ascending order in the manuscript.

  9. Corrections as mentioned in the manuscript should be taken care while making the manuscript short.

Author wants to solve a free convection flow under Boussinesq approximation as mentioned in the section “ Mathematical Analysis” but governing equation (2) do not contain the buoyancy force terms due to temperature and concentration differences. Further, boundary conditions show the presence of external free stream flow which means a mixed convection flow. As a whole, the formulation of equations is completely wrong. After correct formulation of equations, the transformations may not reduce the system of partial differential equations to a set of ordinary differential equations. Even then the problem would be a very simple one and may be considered as a simple extension like exercise of the recent book entitled “Convective Heat Transfer” by I. Pop and D.B. Ingham published in the year 2001.

I strongly feel that the problem would not be of any interest in IJHMT and this paper can be rejected for publication in IJHMT.

To Date: 2nd December, 2004

Professor E. Suhubi,

Associate Editor, IJES.

Dear Sir,

I am sending herewith three copies of our paper entitled “Natural convection in a square cavity filled with a porous medium: Effects of various thermal boundary conditions” by Tanmay Basak, S. Roy and T. Paul for the consideration of it’s publication in “International Journal of Engineering Science”.

Thanking you,
yours sincerely
