Bhí déagóirí ag súil le páistí, ailse, HIV, meiningíteas, droch-chothú, drochshláinte mar gheall ar leibhéil ísle aclaíochta agus buaireamh maidir le bia GM ar na ceisteanna sláinte eile a luadh.




Sláinte Intinne agus Mothúchán agus Leas Pearsanta


Is beag tagairt a déanadh do shláinte intinne agus mothúcháin i gcomparáid le sláinte na colla. Bhí roinnt a dúirt gur chóir comhairleoirí daltaí a bheith sna scoileanna. Bhí ógánach amháin a d’éiligh cúnamh agus treoir do dhaoine óga sa sliocht seo a leanas:

The Government has created an Ireland to be proud of. However, I am very worried, I go to school and mix with a lot of young people every day. There are a lot of unhappy people. They do not have a fatal disease nor have their families been killed-but they are missing something. Most people make an effort and try to be nice, but a lot are hurting inside.


The government, politicians and public servants are doing a fabulous job of running the country, but the quality of life of some people is quite disturbing. Maybe psychologists or music therapists could be built into the school curriculum….At the moment, the youth need some kind of help and guidance.

One thing I would like to see in Ireland would be support groups that would listen to small problems. Such as if you were lonely or upset and wanted to talk to someone but you didn’t feel that your situation was important enough to go to a group such as the ISPCC. I feel that there should be more support groups for everyday problems.

Sábháilteacht

Bhí an-imní ar leanaí agus ar dhaoine óga maidir lena sábháilteacht phearsanta. Feictear dóibh cinnte gur sábháilte an tír í Éire ná go leor tíortha eile ach ní hionann sin agus a rá go n-airíonn siad sábháilte anseo.

Bhí dlúthbhaint ag a sábháilteacht phearsanta le fadhbanna ina gceantar ag go leor – fadhbanna creachadóireachta agus fadhbanna a bhain le maireachtáil i ndrochthimpeallacht. Tugann an nóta seo ó ghrúpa máthaireacha óga léargas ar an imní:
As young mothers of children under seven, we are worried about what the future holds for our kids. For example, they want to go out to play but there is nothing to let them out to. You are either letting them out to busy roads, dirty flat complexes, broken houses or older kids that lead them astray. One child has to play in an alleyway behind her house beside a busy road. Others can only play in the rubbish chutes or beside a dirty pool that has been in the flats for years.

Ba léir go raibh imní ar go leor daoine óga mar gheall ar thuairiscí na meán cumarsáide ar fhoréigean. Ba mhaith leo níos mó Gardaí a bheith le feiceáil in áiteacha poiblí.
Léiríonn na sleachta seo a leanas na hábhair bhuartha:
Ireland is a good country to live in because you don’t hear of as much attacks as you would in America. But of course that is all changing because long ago children used to be let out on the street to play and they could be out until nine but now parents are too worried because of all the attacks and kidnaps they hear about on the news.

I also think it is very dangerous for children walking to school because there are a lot of cars going around, with people asking children to get in. They bribe the children by saying ‘do you like sweets, come and get into the car and I will give you some’.

I think Ireland is a good safe place to live in as there are not people running about mad like in some parts of America. When those boys shot their poor school mates - I think that’s sick.

The town at night time is a bit unsafe, especially around the centre of the town - there are people fighting, breaking shop windows and people going about drunk. Sometimes these people are only in their teens. The town is most unsafe at night and at weekends, usually after discos and when pubs close.

2.5 Foghlaim agus Oideachas

Bhíothas an-sásta leis an gcóras oideachais – a cáilíocht, cáilíocht na múinteoireachta, acmhainí agus teacht ar an oideachas – agus trácht á dhéanamh ar Éire mar áit chónaithe.


Mar a chéile le gnéithe eile de shaol na hÉireann áfach, ní chiallaíonn an sástacht a cuireadh in iúl go bhfuil daoine óga lán-sásta agus nach bhfeictear deiseanna feabhais agus leasaithe dóibh. Bhí go leor tuairimí, ábhair bhuartha agus athruithe á moladh maidir le oideachas.
Bhí eagraíocht amháin a chuaigh i gcomhairle le leanaí an-óg maidir leis an gcaoi a bhfeictear oideachas réamhscoile dóibhsean. Bhí an chuid is mó den chomhairle dírithe ar cheisteanna a bhain le bunscoileanna agus scoileanna iar-bhunscoile. Ba iad na príomhréimsí a bhain leo sin:


  • Áiseanna agus Acmhainí

  • An curaclam agus án t-ábhar a mhúintear/fhoghlaimítear

  • Scrúduithe agus brú scrúdaithe

  • Teacht ar oideachas


Luath-Oideachas

Labhair leanaí an-óg (3-4 bliana) faoin fáth ar maith leo theacht chuig an naíonra agus an rud is fearr a thaitníonn seo ag an naíonra. Léiríonn a gcuid freagraí fiúntas an naíonra dóibh i dtéarmaí súgartha, idirbheartaíochta agus foghlamtha. Seo a leanas roinnt bheag sleachta óna gcuid freagraí:

Áiseanna agus acmhainí

Bhí leanaí agus daoine óga ag iarraidh níos mó ríomhairí sna scoileanna agus teacht níos fairsinge ar an Idirlíon. Ní mar a chéile an riachtanas i ngach cás agus roinnt daoine óga an-sásta leis an teacht a bhí acu féin ar theicneolaíocht.


Luadh an gá a bhí le tuilleadh clósanna súgartha agus scoileanna aeracha, dea-mhaisithe; bhí leanbh amháin mí-shásta mar gheall ar chlós na scoile bheith chomh cúng agus nach raibh cead ag leanaí rith le linn am lóin – rud nár fheil do leanaí bríomhara.
Luaigh daoine óga gur mhaith leo lón te a bheith le fáil i scoileanna. Luadh an gá a bhí le cófraí – agus iad in ann chuig na leabhair ar fad agus an trealamh spóirt – minic go maith agus bhí ceangal idir sin agus rud eile a luadh, an meáchan atá i málaí scoile. Bhí dalta amháin a d’impigh go mbeadh cathaoireacha níos compordaí agus níos sláintiúla sna scoileanna – ó tharla daoine óga ag caitheamh go leor ama ar feadh blianta fada ina suí iontu.
Chuirfeadh sé feabhas ar an scéal dá mbeadh cead fanacht istigh ag am lóin laethanta fuara; agus bhí roinnt tagairtí don chóras iompair – ag iarraidh busanna scoile i mBaile Átha Cliath agus busann scoile níos fearr tríd is tríd.
Is beag tagairt a déanadh d’acmhainí pearsanra. Bhí roinnt a d’éiligh tuilleadh comhairleoirí, ranganna níos lú agus níos mó ná duine fásta amháin i ngach seomra ranga.
An curaclam agus án t-ábhar a mhúintear agus a fhoghlaimítear

Luadh go leor gnéithe den churaclam ag leibhéal na bunscoile agus ag an dara leibhéal. I measc an réimse pointí a luadh maidir leis an mbunscoil, bhí na cinn seo a leanas:

Luaigh roinnt daoine óga nach raibh an curaclam dara leibhéil an-tarraingteach ná an-úsáideach go háirithe ag daoine óga a mbeadh an claonadh iontu an scoil a fhágáil go luath. Luadh an ró-bhéim ar fhoghlaim acadúil agus moladh cáilíochtaí nua ar nós an Ardteistiméireacht Fheidhmeach.


Luadh gníomhaíochta agus tacaíocht tar éis na scoile freisin.
Tugann na sleachta seo a leanas léargas ar an gcaoi ar cuireadh na pointí sin in iúl:
I also feel that what would be helpful would be an Education Centre. Here children of all aoiss (but especially secondary school pupils) could go to study for several hours out of school. This would be especially for children who find their schoolwork hard. There would be one or two adults keeping things under control. These adults could also help any children who are stuck or confused at their work. After a couple of hours they could play some games.
…many pre-teens do not attend secondary school…..There is nothing there to stimulate them into staying, perhaps if there were 2 or 3 subjects that pupils really found interesting they would look forward to attending instead of waiting for the day to end.

I feel that we have a necessity for lockers in our school as the weight of our school bags on our backs is extremely heavy. I have researched what damaois this could do in later life and came up with some shocking results.

Irish is our native language, I would love to be able to speak Irish. It should be made more interesting as a subject and if the teachers taught it as if they wanted to rather than they had to, it would be much better.

Bhí na tuairimí sin le sonrú go mór ar na híméileanna agus na litreacha ó dhaoine óga sna scoileanna agus ó chuid de na seisiúin chomhairle a d’eagraigh eagraíochtaí éagsúla. Léirítear an cineál tuairime a bhí á chur in iúl sna sleachta seo a leanas:


…I think the points system is quite unfair. I work hard at school yet I probably will never get enough points to pursue my ambition.

Also, whilst there is a very good secondary school system I think that students should be tested every year instead of two major exams every three years. I also think the points system should be changed – I think that some of the points required are just too high, even for hardworking students, never mind those who may have any difficulties.

One of the things I dislike about Ireland (and I’m not sure what happens in other countries) but I think a lot of emphasis is put on exams. I know that I am still young and I don’t do many exams in school and when I do, they aren’t that important, but I still think that less pressure should be put on exams. Especially the Leaving Cert. That exam decides on your job and how you spend the rest of your life.

Bhí beagán a rinne trácht ar na fadhbanna a bhíonn ag daoine faoi mhíchumas a theacht ar oideachas agus an fhadhb a bhain le áit a fháil i scoil dara-leibhéil i roinnt ceantair ina bhfuil fás ag teacht ar an daonra. Tá na pointí le sonrú ar na sleachta seo a leanas:


I would like to see more done for disabled children in Ireland…..My sister is very intelligent, but when she gets bigger there is nowhere near for her to be educated. She needs 24 hour care because she is on a special diet, and needs medication very often.

Recently, I received disappointing news that I had been refused a place in …..Community School for September 2001, even though I satisfy all the criteria for a place in the school, both in terms of living in the area and in attending one of the catchment schools. Since I am the eldest it might mean that my brother and my sister might be split up into different schools.

Cé go mbaineann an chuid is mó de na hábhair a luadh le cuinsí sóisialta in Éirinn, cuireadh imní in iúl freisin maidir le leanaí ar fud an domhain a bhfuil droch-chuinsí maireachtála, bochtanas, leatrom, cogaíocht agus gorta ag goilliúint orthu.
