Safety boots (steel toed type) must be worn at all times when at any work area. They minimise the
risk of injury from slipping, damage to the foot from heavy objects, corrosive substances and in some
cases insulate against electric shock.
Care must be taken in the choice of safety footwear to ensure that the type of boot is suitable for the
tasks that the wearer will undertake. Types of Safety Footwear are listed below:
STANDARD SAFETY BOOT - These normally come with steel toe-caps, non-slip soles, steel
midsoles and insulation against heat and cold.
ANTI-STATIC FOOTWEAR - Prevents static build up on the wearer and gives some protection
against electric shock. It also reduces the danger of igniting a flammable atmosphere.
CONDUCTIVE FOOTWEAR - Prevents the build up of static and is particularly suitable for
protection against electric shock.
WELLINGTON BOOTS - Suitable for protection against water, they are made of rubber
polyurethane and PVC. Wellington boots with steel toe-caps, midsoles and ankle bone protectors
are also available.
Safety boots should be cleaned regularly and should not be worn inside offices or accommodation
units unless shoe covers are used.
6.7 Protective
Clothing
Wearing protective Coveralls is compulsory for personnel when in any work area (excluding offices).
Coveralls will comply with approved standards suitable for the assigned tasks. Additional protective
clothing such as aprons or hoods may also be required for certain assigned tasks, e.g. for flame-
cutting, welding, etc.
6.8 Safety and Survival Equipment
Transit / Survival / Immersion Suits
Transit suits will be provided to personnel when transfer to and from a vessel by helicopter is required
(i.e. Caspian Sea sector during cold season, cold areas).
For personnel transfer by Personnel Basket or FROG Personnel Transfer Capsule when transfer
conditions are designated as cold weather, the Fast Rescue Craft (FRC) crew and Work Boat crew
and passengers are provided with and must wear the immersion suits.
Life Jackets and Work Vests
Life jackets are provided for all personnel on the vessel and are kept in lockers in the cabin
accommodation and in boxes adjacent to the Lifeboats / Life Rafts. In addition, life jackets or work
vests of an approved type will be worn by all construction personnel when working over water or
during transfer by Personnel Basket or FRC. They will be kept in a clean and undamaged condition.
Fall arresting equipment
Where it is not practicable to carry out work from a safe location, and there is a risk of falling, full body
safety harnesses will be used together with a suitable safety line (and fall arrest system where
applicable) attached to a secure anchoring point, prior to commencing the work. It may also be
necessary, depending on the task to be carried out, to wear full body safety harnesses when working
in Confined Spaces.
