TAC Applications
The Department receives five submissions of applications and offers data from Tertiary Admissions Centres (TACs) annually. At the end of the fifth submission (reference date of 12 May 2016) there was a total of 274,211 applications. Excluding WA, there were 256,990 applications, a decrease of 1472 applications, or 0.6% compared with 2015.
TAC Applications by State and Territory
Compared with 2015, WA recorded the largest growth in applications (27.7%), due to the Year 12 cohort effect, followed by Tasmania (16.2%). Queensland also recorded above-average growth (4.6%). Applications in SA/NT declined by 6.3%, followed by NSW/ACT
(-4.2%) and Victoria (-1.5%).
Since 2010, applications have risen by 2.7%. The largest growth has occurred in Tasmania (91.1%), and in SA/NT (19.5%).

Of the total number of applications in 2016, 155,962 applications or 56.9% were from current Year 12 applicants. Year 12 applications represent the larger proportion of applications in WA (73.8%), followed by Victoria (66.5%), NSW/ACT (62.1%), Queensland (50.9%), but the reverse is true in SA/NT (45.4%) and Tasmania (17.8%).
Nationally, Year 12 applications increased by 4.3% in 2016. Excluding WA, Year 12 applications increased by 1.6%. Except SA/NT, all states and territories recorded positive growth in Year 12 applications. Non-Year 12 applications decreased by 3.4% in 2016. Excluding WA, non-Year 12 applications decreased by 3.2% with Tasmania recorded the largest increase (19.2%), followed by Queenalnd (7.8%). NSW/ACT recorded a decrease of 13.1% in non-Year 12 applications, followed by SA/NT (-10.8%), WA (-8.2%) and Victoria
(-6.5%)
