Of the total number of applicants in 2016, 122,884 applicants or 37.4% were current Year 12 applicants. Year 12 applicants represent above an average proportion of applicants in NSW (40.5%), Victoria (39.7%), South Australia (39.1%) and Queensland (38.5%). Tasmania (22.9%), ACT (32.6%) and NT (26.6%) recorded below average Year 12 representation. Due to the exclusion of applicants applying through the WA’s tertiary admissions centre in
Table 3 (to account for ‘half-year’ Year 12 cohort effect), WA’s Year 12 representation accounted for only 15.4%.
Nationally (excluding WA TAC applicants), Year 12 applicants decreased by 1.9% in 2016. Only NSW and Queensland recorded increases in Year 12 applicants (1.5% and 1.9% respectively). Victoria (-11.8%), Northern Territory (-8.9%), ACT (-4.2%), Tasmania (-1.4%) and South Australia (-0.3%) recorded decreases in applications from Year 12 applicants.
Non-Year 12 applicants increased by 3.9% in 2016. Victoria recorded the largest increase (13.0%) and WA recorded a decrease of 4.9% in the number of non-Year 12 applicants.
